He said: "As we were walking down the street we could see smoke coming out of the top of the chimney, but there were no flames.

The fire is believed to have started in the ventilation system of the restaurant.

Bob Williams, of Borehamwood fire stations White Watch, attended the fire. He said: "We believe it was started by a burnt out motor in the extraction unit.

"Both crews did a fantastic job. We were worried it had spread to the roof but because of the skill of the crews we managed to stop it spreading, otherwise the whole restaurant would have been ruined."

Firefighters remained at the scene for around an hour. No one was injured in the incident.

Giulio Pollano, owner of the restaurant, said: "No damage was caused to the restaurant and it is open as usual today. The fire brigade did a fantastic job in minnimizing the effect of the fire."
