Read this article where a small VA farmer was fined 15k after having a birthday party on her property. http://reason.com/blog/2012/08/13/virginia-farmer-party-tomatoes-fined

The government does not want us to be self reliant. Without control of the food we eat, they have no control over us. (hint...Monsanto)

The United States is a republic that is quickly deteriorating into a democracy governed by public whim rather than the wisdom and consience of the best leaders.
In other words, it is time for a top to bottom regime change.

How about, clean a service station get fuel instead of cash. Clean shopping carts, get groceries. It would make sense for some of these guys to barter with you because it lowers their actual cost by their profit margin. Hell you can turn around and sell or trade your extras.

I have never been audited, but anything you barter is considered taxable. That is why I avoid it like the plague.

Bingo! I had to ask my accountant why they asked me and he said that people often barter to avoid taxes but that isn't legal.

You can barter but as scott said it's still taxable.

My brother tried to avoid taxes through barter. The level 5 endoscopy that he went through was not pretty, and drug my parents into it. It ended up breaking his business, and nearly ruining my parents just a few years before their retirement. They never had much before, but they had even less then.
