SCRANTON - A duct fire that broke out around noon and was quickly extinguished will close down the Italian restaurant Faccia Luna on North Main Avenue for at least a few days until repairs can be made, part-owner and chef Mark Abrams said.

Mr. Abrams, who shares ownership with Jim Arnold, was impressed by the Scranton Fire Deparment's response time.

"They were here within three minutes," he said.

Scranton police blocked off the street and fire fighters climbed onto the roof and sprayed a dry chemical extinguisher to put out the flames, Assistant Chief Jim Floryshak said.

Initial investigation indicated that the fire started when build-up on the inside of the duct leading from the wood-burning pizza oven to the chimney ignited, Assistant Chief Floryshak said.

It's not uncommon for unburned wood products like creosote and charcoal to buildup over time, he said.

After extinguishing the flames, fire fighters removed the fan from the top of the chimney and cut into the duct to make sure the fire hadn't spread.

"We remind people with wood-burners to clean the chimney," said Assistant Chief Floryshak. If the chimney catches fire the surrounding walls can heat up and burst into flames, causing major damage.

"Luckily, that didn't happen," he said.
