A deep-fat fryer at a North Salem McDonald's caught fire Tuesday, causing heavy smoke damage to the restaurant, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, said Roy Hari, the fire chief of Marion County Fire District 1.

Firefighters from Marion County and the Salem Fire Department arrived at the restaurant, 4706 Portland Road NE, about 2:10 p.m. The building's sprinkler system had not been activated, Hari said. Firefighters said the fire was burning in and around the fryer, he said.

Twenty-three firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes, Hari said.

There was little damage to the restaurant's structure, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
