I have searched the forum on this topic and oxalic acid is the stuff recommended.
I have a driveway with some rust spots. What is the best way to use oxalic acid for this rust. Do I pretreat the spots?
I am a rookie....I admit it..
Thanks you guys:)

It seems that something was just setting on that spot. It's about 12ft.X 6 ft. rust area. Thanks for the insight Jeff:cool:

It is not from the irrigation. I don't see any irrigation pop-ups around the grass line plus if it was from the irrigation chances are you would see a "rust" line from the sod area onto the concrete....

Thomas...did you tell the customer you could remove the stain? If not you may want to ensure that your contract has some verbage in it that pretty much tells the customer that you cannot guarantee 100% removal of the rust and most likely there will be some obvious "shadows" once the job is complete.

Good luck!

Im with Jeff on the rust but if I were going to try something.........

Try 2 cups Ox to 1gal in a pump up sprayer. If it works you will need to do the whole drive to get it even.

If worst comes to worst stain the whole drive and make it decorative.

Actually a real estate agent sent me over for an estimate. They did not tell me about the rust. I took my measurements, photos and left.
The bid is not due till Monday. Thanks for the help ya'll

Thomas ya gotta trust me on this one.... Iron out from home depot or lowes...mix the powder up with some warm water in a pump up sprayer. Normally I use aprox 1 cup to 1 gal of water. Spray it on and then lightly wet the area. It will pull out the rust. YOU WILL BE AMAZED! I use it on all my jobs where battery acid has spilled over from golf carts. Works like a charm!

Good tip Larry RU sure! Just Kiddin... I've got the battery acid stains in my driveway from our cart --OX didn't do too much ...

I'll check out the Home De product

Hydrofluoric Acid. Prosoco makes some great cleaners that contain the stuff in just the right amount. We deal with very heavy iron oxide and silica staining here from the environment. Only thing that will take it out is Hydrofluoric acid or ammonium bifluoride.

Is hydrofluoric acid the one that can kill you?

Does anyone Know why some rust comes right off, some comes off with a particular acid and some seems impenetrable?

Hydrofluoric Acid is the one that will kill you. It goes after the Calcium in your bones and muscles (a lot of people do not know that you have a lot of calcium in your muscles but you do).

If you use products with more than 2% HF Acid, you should get proper emergency training and keep some Calcium Gluconate with you at all times. That is the only thing that might help save your life until the Paramedics get to you.

There is some reading involved and a lot to understand. I dealt with this at the place I used to work at so each year we got the training.

It is a very effective product but the stronger concentrations are just too dangerous for my purposes.

I do alot of work in manufactured home comunities. They ALL have golf carts and they ALL over fill the battery with water and they ALL have got rust stains on their concrete from it. The iron out lifts it right out. Turns it to a mustard coloring and rinses right off. Sometimes a couple applications may need to be applied but it continues to lift it out more and more each time you rinse it. Works great and I swear by it for this type of rust removal.

Larry what's your normal dwell time.
I know you said it'll turn a mustard color.
Does it work on rust from fertilizer?

You will normally see it working within only a few minutes after applying. Even as you give it a light rinse you will see it still working and pulling more out of the concrete. Alot of the stainning from fertilizer is Iron. I use it on these stains as well. Works real well. Sometimes you may notice alot of black staining near big planters that have been placed on concrete or pavers. It will also remove those stains as well like magic. From time to time on real heavily stained areas I will pre-wet and sprinkle the powder on the stain and brush it in but that is rare. Hope this helps! :)

This is all very correct. The more I learn about it, the less I like using it, and the more precautions we take. I have found ammonium bi fluoride (ex:Klenztone) to do almost just as good of a job in a lot of cases. It is much less toxic to people. The drawback is it is unbelievably deadly to a lot of plants. I have seen them die from just the vapors!

Got some Iron Out Sunday and tried it out Sunday night. Worked like a champ on some very old rust. Wet the cement first and sprinkled some powder to see what it could do - lifted the rust but did 'bleach' out the area. Should probably be used mixed with water as directed. Great tool in the box. Felt kind of silly with a home-depot product that was there all along -by the way have found C L R to be worthless for anything, what they use in their commercials is a mystery to me. Have used klenstone and it is an amzing product in some situations - seems to 'eat' like an acid without 'burning' like an acid. Very mild, have had it on my hands many times. Says it has fluoride salts. Thanks for the tip.

Good Deal Tom, Thanks for posting your results. Been telling people for a long time that it works but many are reluctant to try it for some weird reason. If ya don't like the HD packaging just dump it into a seperate container and mark it magical rust removing powder # 1458 or something! LOL No one will ever know. Ha, Ha, Ha! I was washing a house one time and a neighbor brought over a paver with black stains on it. He had taken it to a bunch of places to find out why all the pavers along his drive were turning black. No one could figure out what it was or how to get rid of the black. After asking him a few questions I leaarned that he has a lawn spraying company come out and fertilize and they were overspraying onto the drive. I wet the paver, applied some powder and poof,,, gone! I thought the guy was gonna hug me... The stuff does work. A little pricey but I normally charge accordingly.

For super effectivenisity - apply product, cover with plastic, then marinate
