Reputation

I just scrolled my mouse over the reputation bars for the first time this morning. I thought you gained reputation by having more post, but looking at different people and their amount of posts and reputation, I see that is not the case. I then clicked on my reputation icon to see what it does and it told me how many reputation points I have.

How is the reputation calculated and how do you get it?
