Reality,

Many years back I warned people about posting negative and abusive. Now they all are realizing that customers are visiting BBS, opps now I better remove my signature and identity.

I’m watching close the forums, customers are watching. This is ridiculous; you have a media to sell people on your service. Now because you’re ridiculous silly posts are in the public eye you want to run and hide.

I’m laughing and those who have not remained professional. Not that I have been and angel by no means. I have flown off the handle and not proud of it. Still 99% of the content I provide is good information helping my fellow contractors.

Lets all wake up we don’t need closed forums, we need people understanding and remaining professional and helping one another. Consumers will value this and DYI when in trouble may remember you and hiring you to fix there problems.

BBS can make you money and they can hurt you. The reality is that your choice.

Ron,

My hat is off to you. I don't think anyone could have said it any better.

Todd

Always watch what you say.
You never know who's listening (or reading) or when it will come back to bite you.
That's a good reason I don't OVER indulge in that golden necter in the brown bottle out in public.
Loose lips, sink ships. A lot of truth to them ol words.

I hate all my customers and I screw them out of every dollar I can.....o wait wrong post. Just kidding, my customers are great

I can count on one hand how many customers have come from a bulletin board in the few years I have frequented them. On the other hand, a search for my name or company name will probably show quite a few posts from these boards. I am me. I try to remain professional and do not burn bridges. I got into a tiz with the PWNA and caught myself sliding off track a bit. Your words are wise King Muskrat, everyone would be wise to at least keep them in the back of their minds when they tart tapping those keys.

Ken - I completely agree. Most of us will find that if we type our name in on yahoo or google, alot of the bbs threads will come up because of our signature area.

Ron - You are right, customers are out there reading these bbs boards and it will make a HUGe impact on wheter they hire you or not. Hopefully they will find your posts where you have provided great information and see how professional you are, but sometimes they may run across the duct tape thread and....well..........

Ramblin' Rant

Here is something else to think about in the same vein: There is no reason why people that disagree, even vehemently, need to abuse one another to argue their points.

I have been involved in professional conflicts that have been so hairy that my safety and health were in obvious danger. Hell, I've taken beatings for my views and stances...but I've always managed to return to the bargaining table without being abusive. This often was the only advantage I had there.

If you are capable of commanding the language you are steeped in everyday well enough to tear apart your opposition without resorting to name-calling, obscenity, or just plain bad arguments, you may well drive the less-gifted opponents and their adherants to such tactics.

Think about the merits of your position when you are about to resort to the methods that most here call "unprofessional". If you can't get through without stooping to something you wouldn't want your daughter or mother to hear you say, maybe you need to rethink the stance you've taken.

It isn't mealy-mouthed to keep above certain gutter-tricks, it is effective. Think of it as salesmanship: Instead of calling people names and attacking their parentage and ethnic background, attack the ideas they espouse. Be intelligent, and cogent, and make your arguments while refuting theirs with fact rather than rancor. If you would have the support of others that think like you do, or if you would like more people to share your views, you need to convince them not only that you are right, but that you are the kind of person with whom they would associate.

All this boils down to is that forums generally are public places, so we should be mindful that others reading these posts will assume that we are smart enough to know they are public.

Every one of us judges people we see, hear, and otherwise encounter in the world around us, it is our nature as people to do this, and to be aware that others do it in everyday life.

These forums are part of everyday life these days. Like it or no.
