Has anyone had any luck obtaining work from the School Systems in their area? I know alot of school districts have their own personnel do their pressure washing work. If you have did work for any, how did you determine what rate to charge them? Thanks Hugh

working on it

I am brand new to the biz...I have tried to contact the head of grounds and maitnenance in my area to inquire about washing city/county buildings including schools. I have yet to receive a phone call back yet...I am going to continue to pursue this...I don't think these guys look at the cost as it is built into their budget but I think a good angle for this is to remind them that they could allocate those dollars to pressing issues that the community pushes them on. I live in a clean quaint town but I see that there are many of buildings that need attention. As far as what to charge?? If I can first get in to talk with these folks I think I can figure out in conversation what they likely spend by just asking them how long it takes them to wash a particular building and how many men do they assign to get the job done....I think if you approach this from a....how can I help you???? Instead of just quoting a price on a project then this will make the man in charge look good and in the end picking up a few sizeable jobs??? That's my angle???

Down here they actually called me. It was the Maintenance supervisor.

It would be better if you found out who it was and invite him to lunch as they are usually very busy taking care of a lot of schools. Maybe even see if you could bring something so he could eat quickly and get back to work.

They know what is needed and what the district will pay for. Sometimes they have to delay to put it into the budget for the next year but will usually have it in there for the next few years.

I've done one school here. And that was only because I used to be the Network Manager for the District and I had high level contacts in the District Administration office. This was an unusual situation as they had just added on 15000 square feet of classrooms and needed everything done quickly in preparation for an inspection by the Superintendent.
Aside from that one job, I have not any luck at all with schools around here. But, I added it to my portfolio and time will tell if there will be any more opportunities. Schools around here have very tight budgets that get tighter every year, and I'm sure that is the case pretty much everywhere. So hiring contractors to do things they can have their maintenance people do is not a big priority. Keep at it though, you never know.

I do the KEC for a few school systems in my area. They are difficult to get into, but once you're in, you usually don't have to worry about losing the account very easily.

I finally got into a private school here. Alot of wealthy familys send their kids to this school. I cleaned a fence that surrounded the school and that lead to them wanting me to clean all their buildings & concrete twice per year and clean their roofs once a year. Now I just have to figure out what I will be charging them for the work. Take care and thanks for all the responses. Hugh

That is great, keep up the good work.
