Why do they sometime put what appears to be an extra 15ft or so of duct usually with an elbow on the roof when it would seem that the fan could simply be located where the duct exits the roof?
I would have a picture for but my media card in my camera needed reformatting and it did not keep any of the pictures on it at the time. bummer!

The exhaust duct outlet is supposed to be 10 feet from property lines and 10 feet from intake air. That may be why youmay see some odd configurations on the roof. Of course all of those ducts on the roof have access panels, right?

Oh come on Douglas be serious, you realize that what you are saying is that installers are following the mechanical & fire codes. Surely, its more a matter of making it more difficult for the exhaust cleaners. :D

no paticular reason

Bryan,

Sometimes they put a nice long elbow on the fan for no paticular reason.

I wish I had the picture.
This place is a bed and breakfast in a 100-year-old house. What they actually did was put the fan about 5 feet away from where people walk up an outside stair case. If they had put it on the duct where it exits the roof it would have been about 20feet away. It does have access panels, flat panels with 20 screws each, night quite in the right places, but we got to it before it got real bad so we are able to work with the panels and get it cleaned. The only reason I can come up with for the extra duct is to minimize the noise from the fan heard from inside the kitchen.
