Poughkeepsie restaurant closed by fire

A well established Chinese restaurant in the Town of Poughkeepsie has been shut down for almost a week after a fire damaged part of the eatery.

The Fortune Cooky on Raymond Avenue celebrates its 26th anniversary in October, but co-owner Amy Lin said she and her husband David Lin don't know when they will reopen.

"It is pretty bad," Lin said. "Right now it depends on the insurance company."

No one was hurt in the fire, which was reported at 3:20 a.m. on July 5, the Arlington Fire Department said.

A handwritten sign on the front door Monday said the restaurant was closed for renovations. The fire was in a rear portion of the property, in an attached addition, the fire department said. Firefighters from Poughkeepsie and Pleasant Valley also helped fight the blaze.

The main structure of the building, which also houses Sushi Village, appeared unharmed from the outside, though Amy Lin said there was smoke and water damage inside The Fortune Cooky. A rear section of the building seemed extensively damaged.

David Lin was working at the restaurant at the time of the fire, his wife said.

"When you're an owner you don't have a regular work schedule," said Amy Lin, who said her husband worked more than 12 hours that day.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the fire department said Monday.
