Peoria McDonald's closed after grease fire

PEORIA - Hot grease splatters from a french fry station ignited vent ductwork at a local fast food restaurant Thursday morning, canceling the rest of breakfast for its early morning crowd.

The fire began about 6:40 a.m. at McDonald's, 1017 N. Main St., and caused about $100 damage, Peoria Battalion Chief Gary Van Voorhis said. The restaurant, however, had to close pending an OK from the Peoria City/County Health Department and did not reopen until about 10:30 a.m.

An employee quickly noticed the fire and activated the extinguisher on the machine's hood. The extinguisher eventually would have kicked in and put out the fire, Van Voorhis said, but in those extra moments the flames could have spread up to the ceiling and created more damage
