Northern White Cedar

Has anyone come across Northern White Cedar used in children's playsets? The swingset manufacturer markets this wood as splinter proof and claims it NEVER needs sealing or staining.

Some friends are thinking of buying a set for their kids and asked if the additional cost is worth it to have wood that never needs maintained.

I've never heard anyone claim to have wood that won't eventually break down or is naturally waterproof.

can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks
Shawn

It probably needs less maint. then other woods, however, almost all wood will need to be maintained at one time or another.

If you dont clean/seal it, that nice white cedar is going to be a nasty gray color in a year's time........and will get worse and worse. So, it may not disintegrate, but it will look like junk if it is not sealed.

Yeah, that's kind of what i figured, I just haven't heard of "northern white cedar" before.

The claim of never having to seal or stain seemed a little hard to believe.

Thanks for the response.
