No Insurance Required????

Someone please help me understand a little problem I have.

I get a call Wednesday for a maintenance company to go out and clean a national video store. I was told they want a metal roof washed, building wash and awnings cleaned all the way around. The price was not to exceed $370.

I tell them that I would go look at the store 1st before I took the job. I told them I could have my insurance company fax them over a additional insured. They told me "we don't require you to have insurance".

Long story short I told them I would need $670 to do the whole job since this place hasn't been cleaned in a long time. They said they had another pressure washer come in at $350 to do the job.

My Irish temper got to me a little bit and I told them "well you get what you pay for, if you want the $350 job I'm sure thats what the company will give you then".

I'll go over tomorrow to take pictures to see how the place came out. I'll post pictures tomorrow or Wednesday.

How can a maintenance company not require their subs to carry any form of insurance?

sounds like someone is doing sgaddy work to me.

You never really know what is happening in the background as some contractors and management companies have umbrella policies to protect them in case their subcontractors do not have enough insurance or if it gets cancelled during the job or in some cases if they do not have insurance at all, this is what I have been told by a management company before so you just never know.

I had a similar call earlier this year for the Blockbuster video stores, they wanted the carpet done, windows cleaned, concrete cleaned, awnings and walls done, all for under $400.00 and I told them that the concrete alone would be that much becuase of the neglect. I did not do the job as I do not clean carpet and they wanted a company to do all the work for them, not several companies.

I do not rent videos from them so I did not go back to see if it was done.

Maybe Blockbuster Video has a magic number of $400 then all the way across the U.S I don't rent videos from Blockbuster either.

My wife asked me why I want to go back and see the other guys work at this Blockbuster. I told her that I like to make fun of the hacks around here every now and then. This way I hope that someone from the corporate office will see the hacks work posted on the internet.

I heard that they are doing bad financially due to the NetFlix and some places stopped exterior cleaning like the windows and sidewalks and awnings. Not sure of what their long-term plan is but at this time I don't know if it would make a difference if we all sent in pictures to corporate, they might just be trying to survive and not go under and save all the money they can to not go out of business.

Other companies..........maybe.

Lifes too short to worry about people like that. Spend that energy on the quality customers that deserve you.

If it's a maintenance company that is subbing out the work they are just eating the liability and workman's comp insurance. The subs work will get thrown on their gross and they will have to pay accordingly. It would worry me that even if they don't require it they don't want a copy of your insurance certificate to save them money. Poor management or they are just used to dealing with low ball uninsured contractors. They are probably charging $740 and paying 1/2.

I never take it personal. It's just business.

Like Kemp said just go find a good customer.

The Block Buster in our area ( US 19 in Palm Harbor, Fl ) is closing. I don't know if other locations are also closing. My wife & I noticed the 'Everything must go' signs on our way home today.

Most of the 7-11s and supermarkets around here have the video machines now that you can rent a movie for only $1 I can see how Blockbuster is hurting right now.

You guys are right though, it's not worth wasting my time going to look at someone elses work especially when I already know it will be bad.

Even though I may not say it at times I always appreciate any and all advice you guys give me. Thanks again.
