NEW Engine Troubles

I bought a new 13hp engine from Harbor Freight and had it installed on my pw. My mechanic said the new engine did not come with a "rectifier?" to charge the battery for the burner and the elec starter. He said he can probably pull it out of the old Honda engine, but it is in the middle of the engine, and is not a quick job.

Anyone that bought an engine from Harbor Freight ever had this issue? The engine is item #66555.

The rectifier should be an external part, not in the 'middle', I think. It's a epoxy box or cube with wires going into it.

Tom is right. It is an external part. Its usually a small box with vent fins and either 3, 4, or 6 wires going into it. If he told you it was internal and would be long and expensive to change over id take it to another shop.

This is the only external part I see with vent fins. It is mounted next to the pump. Used to be hooked up to the old engine, but they said it wasn't needed on the new one...

The Harbor Freight engine probably has a 3 amp charging system on it...just enough to recharge after a start. You will need to pull the stator, flywheel, control box, and wiring harness off your old engine and retrofit it to the new one.

I think that's what they are doing tomorrow. Thanks guys.
So the part with the fins in the pic is part of the charging system?

Yes, that's the regulator / rectifier for a 20 amp charging system. Your new engine has a dc generator producing 14 volts at 3 amps. The old one makes around 30 volts ac that has to be rectified and regulated.
So this one is not needed? Only thing left is to swap the old parts from the Honda that are internal?
