Motor Issue

Hi Guys,

My Honda GX620 starts right up, runs smooth, no hiccups or anything. Last two days, after running for about 90-120 minutes, it wants to stall. First day, I quit and changed the oil, filter, spark plugs, and treated the gas. Second day it did it again. After letting it cool down for an hour, it runs fine again, but wants to stall after 90 minutes.

Any ideas?

It could be one of the coils is getting hot and breaking down. Is the machine in an enclosed trailer?

Check the electrical side of things. Specifically the terminal post connections on the battery. I had the same intermittent problem with a skid, turns out it was a completely loose negative battery cable at the post. It was loose, and would vibrate off during use, effectively shorting the system and it would die due to short in ignition circuit. Make sure they are TIGHT.

I also had a similar problem on a gx690 engine last year.... Kept dying.... Turns out it was a needle valve in the carburetor that was becoming stuck.....i think due to a vapor/vacuum lock issue because of the gas cap venting..... My poly tank would get sucked in concave like a kids juice box.... Should not have done that if it was venting..... I think it caused the needle float in the top fuel line inlet if the carb to stick shut..... Once the carb was replaced.... And different gas cap.... It runs fine.

So, last year I replaced the coils and did some other work. Still had the problem. Replaced fuel filter. Still had trouble for a couple days and then it was fine.

It just started doing the same thing yesterday. Starving for fuel. I watch the clear gas filter and the gas barely drips in. There are air bubbles too. Is that normal, or do I need to replace the lines?

The caps do go bad. One thing that will cause it is overfilling the tank. This will clog up the filter in the cap.

Especially those new tall chrome caps on the GX390. Those fail more often than the flat, non "green" caps.

I always have to leave my lid unscrewed. You sell the flat caps, Russ?

I did fill it up that day. And again, the next day it worked without an issue.

Ron, I think I will change the lines out - it was 95 that day also.

Thanks for the info guys
