I have attached a drawing of this system, with a little thought it could have been so easy. It looks like the other company only ever did the hood, it is really bad but as is, I can't do a thing with it, I need the access opened just to get my hoses to the roof. I was so stunned by the severity of this system I didn't even think to pick up the camera and take a picture. The reason I am posting this drawing is to see if there may be a reason for this design, there are no obstacles in the way. The fire inspector who was standing over my shoulder and not happy they made him come in at 10:00pm almost fell down when I looked up the duct with the light and then lifted the fan.
