Modified Big Guy

I think some guys have done that already, but here it is one more time if someone is interested to upgrade.
I changed the whip hose from 1/4 to 3/8, removed the 1/4 gun and replaced it with straight 3/8 heavy duty ball valve. Installed a swivel on the end. This was not a planned project so I used whatever I had in the shop, but here are the right parts you need:

1. 5ft whip hose. I had 6ft and it was too long.
2. A heavy duty ball valve. The bulky valve that I never used, did a great job, so I definitely recommend it.
3. Hose swivel. I will upgrade with a better swivel with my next order from PW Products and Lori :).
4. 2x 2.5 3/8" brass nipples. I had a couple 2.5" brass nipples which were long enough for that purpose.
5. 3/8" brass female threaded coupling.
6. Teflon tape or lock thread.

I drilled another hole, down on the left handle bar 0.51/8" lower than the original one so the holes where the gun used to be can match straight.
The 3/8 female coupling had a good purpose to go right through the left hole on the handle. That way, I could lock it with the two little pins that used to lock the gun. On the other hand, I don't really like that coupling, because it restricts the water flow. If there is a 3/8 female hexagonal to male piece adapter, that would be the perfect fitting :). The distance from the left whole to the right whole is 6.5-7" minus the valve. So you can use any combination of nipples/couplings that make total of 6.5-7". On the right side hole I had the 3/8" nipple which was too small to be locked with the two pins, so I spliced a piece of 3/4 blue type copper pipe and put it on top of the nipple. After all, the handle felt very strong and sturdy. No moving or loose parts whatsoever.

The considerations after the upgrade:
The gun had more comfortable feel and insulated the heat. The valve will get hot when using hot water, so gloves will be used at all times from now on :).
It takes a second longer to close the valve instead of using a gun, but in my case this is not a problem at all.

And here is a pic if my walk-through was too complicated and unclear :)..

my Big Guy

Heres how I did mine. My original was exactly the same but in alum. it broke a few weeks after i built it. so i needed somthing stronger(metal). THis way you dont have to be holding on to somthing hot all night long. This is a "bolt on" up grade and takes about 2-5 min to changeout the ball valve. dont forget to upgrade the hose, enjoy

One more thing guys put a 90* above the swivel. It will solve the O-ring issues & be able to get under tables, benches, and chairs better.

I just bought a big Guy a month ago and have used it alot lately. I am going to upgrade to the larger hose and ball valve tomorrow. Thanks guys! That is good info.

Great idea, Dimitar! (I am a little worried about the LOW PRESSURE rating of the brass nipple(s). Upgrade to steel.

Great Job!

Hi Lori,

I had those nipples from before so I used them. I also had galvanized ones, but they get rusty too fast. I have seen galvanized nipples and elbows snap like plastic under pressure and heat. I definitely need to upgrade to stainless steel. I am making a list of items and chemicals that I will order soon from you.

nice modification Dimitar... on a different note, is that victory tow-behind sweeper in the background of your pic worth the money?

Steven,

Yes, it is Victory Sweeper T-500. We keep it for back up unit when the trucks need to stay overnight in the shop for repair or maintenance.
I don't like the fact that it is a trailer and it is a lot more liability for employees than the Isuzu/GMC Sweepers. It is better if you use it with shorter bed truck. An SUV might be best. If you have parking lots with lots of landscaping isles, it is not very convenient. Backing up as you sweep is another concern when having employees. If the parking lot is clear (no isles or car stops), it will work very good. It takes some time to get used to it and to find the good clearance between the flappers and the ground (needs to be adjusted). Overall it does sweep effectively, but can't substitute the good old 348i :).

Believe it not, the stainless that I have is only rated to 150 psi. Great idea though!
