Ron are you implying it a very fickle thing on keeping a spot? I haven't seen it change all that much for me. I remember awhile back something of change went down to where people were loosing there spots but I think things have recovered on their own or by some google adjustments rather. I didn't do anything, that I know of, to fix whatever the issue was.
One thing for sure is that for every little specific advise or warning that one seo may give there is another that says the opposite or may at least partially disagree. I'd almost bet that at least half the warnings or advises to do with linking or how to build a site up are of minimal importance compared to the original planning and execution of a site.
