I personally hate using scissor lifts, they are too unstable. I always rent a boomlift. I managed to turn one into a 3 wheeler once.

A 60 ft lift to wash windows on a house???? Must be one big huge house...

A manlift is not like a truck or car where they can just start rolling down a hill on their own. They are driven by hydraulic motors. They are designed to be in one of two modes: Free Wheel or Drive. I have never seen one start rolling by itself. Operator Error. I'm sure he was not trained properly.

These rental companies rent to everyone that has $$$. I have been as guilty as anyone about renting equipment that I was not qualified to operate. These companies just drop off the equipment and never even ask if you know how to or are qualified to operate the equipment. Over the past few years I have become familiar with most of the lifts and am fairly comfortable operating them. I was at a round table at Sunbrite a few years back and Sunbelt Rentals was there doing a training. Maybe there have been other trainings at the events, if not this would be a good Idea at future events.

While there are a few safety features that should prevent a scissor lift from rolling freely if it's not properly maintained they might not have been working or failed.
