Lets talk about Wet Vacs

I have been using Sears and Rigid for years. The body is strong but the wet vac head is cheap plastic. Breaks quickly on kitchen tiles. Metal replacement heads are nowhere to be found cause the size does not match up with commercial heads. So what type of wet vacs do you guys find best for replacement parts, like heads and hose and durability?

We use the same wet vac. I assume you are talking about the squeegee nozzle. We don't even use them, we use the nozzle made for picking up dirt. It's about 6 inches wide, it doesn't get all the water like a squeegee would but it works. I have looked into vac's many times but the sears vac is only $100 or so and it last about a year, I wish they would build a better wheel system for them though. I guess for $100 I can't complain.

"squeegee needs three screws and your set, two years no problems"(Home Depot) "Get Extra Hose" never have to handle it as much+get all the hood drains&rails. This unit is a Monster,Sucks all kinds of grease and keeps on going!

Hi Mikey,

I assume you still work alone, most of the time. How do you empty that 12 gallon Shop-Vac when it's full and there is only a small floor drain that ain't open. Do you hoist it up and dump or sump pump it out and dump?

wet / dry vac

Ed, Here is a C/P from another board I goto. But you probably have already been there.

Ive used Hako, Granger, Shop-Vac. Stainless Steel and Plastic. I like the SS 16 - 20 gal size with dump on the bottom. Ive used the Shop-Vac commercial variety this last year with some success. They seem to last about 1 year and then die. Hako and Granger are rebuildable with replacable motors. Shop-Vac, Ridgid are rebuildable with only propriotory parts.

The weak link in all this equipment is the wand and squeege. I buy 1-1/2" metal wands and squeeges and 1-1/2" commercial vac hose from www.shopnss.com. They carry commercial floor equipment and parts. I adapt the vac fitting with some PVC pipe to accept the hose and get some cuffs to fit and you are all set. The hose and wand will outlast the vac.

How do you empty that 12 gallon

only allow to fill halfway if I have to lift it by myself.
PS I saving up for this one. pumps it out of the tank! And you can keep vacuuming while it pumps water out of the tank!

Mikey,
When you purchase the pump vac you may want to be sure the store has a no-questions return policy (like Lowe's). We seem to vac up a lot of 'lumps', and the small waterhose discharge will stop up in a hurry.
Richard

Yes I was wondering the same thing. Will the discharge hose gum up with all the good stuff up in the V or the crud living behind the fryer.
I have thought about trying one of these pump out jobs.
As far as pumping it out of the garbage can receptacle I prefer a good sump pump.(No aluminum inerds)

And if you use a shop vac. First thing ya do is get rid of that cheezey hose and buy something with a smaller diameter. This requires downsizeing the in port on your vacum to fit a smaller hose.
You can put 20 -30 foot of smaller diameter hose on a shop vac without any trouble.
This allows you to move around alot easier. So you dont have to play pull the elephants nose.
You can find rolls of smaller diamater hose at SEARS hardware LOWES and the likes of.
The hose is similiar to swimming pool hose but much tuffer.I have used swimming pool hose in a pinch. It will not stand up to professional use.
I have had aluminum squeegee heads last for two years before they broke. Suppose I shouldnt have throw it into the truck -I'd probobly still have it today. A whoopsee.

Oh and while i'm at it. The wheels on the shop vacs are Garbage!
Ripp those suckers of and build a nice little square frame for the bottom of them and put two spin around wheels on it with two stationary wheels.
Nothing worse then getting almost to the mop sink and having a blow out! lol

yep , The other idea I have been toying with, which I know is avail. but could save $550-800 on is a trash pump combo W/vacuum system but not as bulky!

The trash pump works ok. At one time we would set up a 'trap' with lightweight angle over which we would toss a tarp and pump from there. Works ok, but after trying many and various systems we have come full circle and are back to a standard vac. For us we save the set-up; carry less equipment; and have learned to use less water. I guess, for us, simpler is better. Hope you will post results if you find something better.

I take a 5 gallon bucket, dip it in the full vac and empty enough to make it managable.
