Fire closes eatery on Columbus Drive
Saturday, August 26, 2006
A grease fire closed a Downtown Jersey City deli/restaurant near the Grove Street PATH Station yesterday afternoon, officials said.
Firefighters responding to the 1:11 p.m. alarm at Cafe Grove on Christopher Columbus Drive found smoke escaping through ventilation ducts in the building, Fire Department spokesman Andrew Johnson said.
The fire was under control in about 25 minutes, but not before heavy damage was done to the kitchen, he said. The electrical fire ignited grease in the ventilation system, Johnson said.
The business will be closed until repairs are made and it passes a city health inspection, Johnson said.
