James Hardie Siding

James Hardie Siding Company. Anybody ever cleaned this stuff? The website says it is a fiber cement siding. Went to do an estimate on a home and the customer tells me the website says not to use bleach, but I haven't been able to find anything that says that. I'm going to call the manufacturer Monday, but I figured if you guys would have seen this before. Can I really not use bleach?

I have done a lot of the hardie siding house washes over the years, no problem with soft washing the houses.

Thanks for the info guys. I figured it was close enough to masonite, and when washing masonite, I just soft wash it like normal. The customer says the website said no bleach, but I haven't been able to find it. I'll call him back and see if I can figure out where he got this info.

It is probably something that he read on a different type of cleaner website or a different contractor's site where they are bashing cleaners to promote their own to make a buck.

I washed a brick/vinyl house for a new customer yesterday where he was told and read that bleach is bad for vinyl and he was concerned with using it on his house. I talked to him about it, explained that I have been washing vinyl houses with my soft washing system for a number of years along with my own house and not ever had a problem. We talked about the chemistry involved in the soaps and vinyl and other surfaces and put his mind at ease and explained about competitors or other cleaning chemical companies bashing certain chemicals to promote their own and he understood. We talked about other things and he agreed that soft washing is the better route to go after we talked about the competition and the other chemicals out there that are bashing bleach and what happens when you use those other products.

This new customer could not believe how clean his house came as we worked on it!

He was truly amazed and said it was like Magic!

He admitted that he was sceptical about what I told him and I told him that is ok, I understand as there are a lot of companies out there spreading a lot of b.s., over-hyping themselves and promising "miracle-like" results when you hire them and has seen some of their b.s. before and did not want to deal with those kind of companies.

When the job was done and we were rolling up hoses I asked the owner if he feels he received good value for his money he told me that he was definately happy, his wife is very happy and he will have me back every year or twice a year as needed and will tell all his neighbors. It is nice to have these kind of new customers.

Nice work! Hopefully this situation will turn out the same as yours. I'll keep everyone informed. Thanks!

It is great that homeowners are searching the internet for solutions to their cleaning situations but I wish they would find more of the forums so they can see many of the great before/after pictures, see the threads on what works and what does not, see professional results and the discussions about the work done and understand that we are out to try to help the homeowners out there, not just trying to make a buck.

With a lot of biased-based chemicals out there and biased-based contractors out there, it will be hard for homeowners out there to understand who has their best interest at hand without gambling on their property and hard-earned money.

Education and these forums are the key to helping all the homeowners out there and starting to build long-term relationships with them.

I am very thankful to these forums, some of my customers have found them, I wish more would so when talking with them they would understand how we want to help them, build relationships, grow our businesses and help them protect their property.

I agree a bleach soap solution woll work fine on that surface. I would tend to believe that is the preferred method of cleaning it to kill the mildew and algae.

Good explaination to the homeowner Chris.

Here in North Fla it's hard to find a house built in the last 10 yrs or so that doesn't have Hardie Board on it. My house included. Never had a problem with washing it. I use simple cherry and ssh.

well, typically hardiplank siding is a very durable siding. It can be washed like what you have suggested but don't do it frequently because it might damage the siding. Too much exposure of bleach can damage almost everything.

I don't think there is a problem of frequent exposure to bleach as most houses are only washed every year or so.
