I always said I would take on a hurricane any day before taking on a tornado. We have had several major tornados in my neck of the woods over the past 30 years. This one missed our county but it's devestating - over 33 dead in Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania.
The last big one we had about 3 years ago killed only 5 people in our city, which was amazing, since it flattened a lot of communities from St. Louis to Ohio, W. Virginia and Pennsylvania. A section of it hit about 2 blocks from where I was working at the time. It happened in the early am before rush hour traffic. It was about 2 miles wide and about 15 miles long.
I drove thru some of the neighborhoods just minutes after this happened. At first I wasn't sure what I was looking at until I saw the trees sheare at half height. The sight of brick homes leveled with only a stove standing, or only a concrete slab remaining along with thousands of trees ripped in half, like toothpicks, is burned into my mind for ever.
God Bless!
