Inexpensive, Durable, Readily Availiable Alternatives To PVC Wands

Apple Roof Cleaning

Roof Cleaning Instructor
Some I have helped get into roof cleaning have expressed a desire for an inexpensive, readily availiable, lightweight wand.
We ONLY clean roofs, and give free advice.
I have NO desire to make, or sell anything, at the moment way too busy cleaning roofs!
Maybe when I retire ?

But, here is a wand we have used for some of our men who liked using them.
https://www.accuspray.com/store/spra...Spray_Guns.htm

Lets take an "Apple Look" at this little guy ?
He sports a Poly body, and Viton innards, a good thing for Chlorine.
He also features an adjustable angled nozzle holder, good for doing tile roof edges by walking the roof backwards, and spraying from the bottom up.

This "catches" the edges, although an experienced roof cleaner can do the same thing with a gun.

One will also note this wand comes with a 3/8 hose barb, NOT good.

But, Home Depot just happens to have brass 1/2 inch garden hose adaptors to screw right on the ends of this little guy.

We think this wand has several advantages over the crude, bulky, PVC wands used by some.

We find from actual experience that it is far easier to simply squeeze the trigger then wrestle with a ball valve on a roof.

True, a ball valve can be left on, but so can this wand/gun combo, if desired.

Weight is the biggest advantage, this guy is light, and easy on the body/wrists.

It ALSO takes not only stainless nozles, but Plastic ones from Spraying Systems as well.

And, a third advantage is low cost, and ready availiability.

We have tested this wand here at Apple Roof Cleaning, and it meets our tough standards for low cost, and long life.

We also suggest you get yourself a Spraying Systems catalog, and check out all the different nozzle types for use with this wand ?

Be sure and look at cone pattern nozzles instead of fan spray for doing tile roofs.
Some of our guys preferred them.

Me, I am an old school roof cleaner, and I use a gun with a 25 degree fan spray nozzle.

I shoot a tile roof from the bottom up, against the face of the tiles.

On big shingle roofs, I go to a 45 degree high GPM nozzle in my gun, and really rock.

There is no right,, or wrong way to clean a roof, as long as pressure isn't used on shingles.
Some like the PVC wands, some don't.
I just wanted to present an alternative for those who want to give their wrists, and pocketbooks a break.

Here is a better example http://www.rittenhouse.ca/asp/product.asp?PG=764

I posted that link in haste, but it would still work if the hose barb were changed.
The end of the gun with the hose barb on it simply screws off, and a larger brass adaptor can easily be added.
Even though Brass, or Stainless is not ideal for Chlorine, I like it better for hose barbs then plastic, unless it is schedule 40 or 80 PVC.

We find plastic hose barbs tend to break because of the constant pressure the hose imposes on them.

Believe it or not, with the right tip, these little wands shoot well too.
It seems that "necking down" from a larger hose size to the smaller wand increases mixture velocity, and creates almost a "rifle barrel effect"

I was amazed how far these little guys shot, even with a shurflo.

They are only rated for 150 PSI, but I spoke to the Spraying systems engineers, and unofficially, they will do almost 250 easily.

I have turned my old John Blue PP 193's up to near 300 PSI to shooot temporarily, and never had a problem, but it is always a good idea to protect one's eyes doing this.

I wonder if there were some way you could adapt the gun part only for your wand Don ?

Here are some adaptors I found in a quick search http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/...tail/iid/11754

I will tell you what I think would be real cool.

Make a threaded PVC wand using this chemical proof gun Don, so one could "add on" extra length, as needed ?

The "extra pieces" could be made progressively smaller in diameter, for weight savings, and one could simply screw em on, or take em off when not necessary ?

Hey, just thinking...
Chris

Here is a Poly Body gun we just found.https://secure3.visi.com/spraypartsr...ProductID=1443
It also takes all the spraying systems plastic and stainless nozzles, so one can be SURE it will work, when the correct nozzle size is found for your application.
It would be good to check the inside construction of this gun out before purchase.
The previous one we posted has viton insides, and this one is more expensive.
One would PRESUME it has chemically resistant insides, but you can NEVER be too careful dealing with Chlorine!

If it is brass and metal, stay away ...
If plastic and Viton/EDPM it will work.

Just another possible alternative ....

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This gun has stainless steel insides, a source of possible problems!
Contrary to what you MAY have been told, Stainless Steel only has C resistance to Sodium Hypochlorite!
THICK Stainless usually will last, but I highly doubt thick Stainless is used inside this gun?

So, we are back to the Apple tried and true gun http://www.mid-tech.com/MS/TeeJet/pr...D=287&SUB=true

This is a better look at this amazing, inexpensive gun.
This little guy has a polyproplyne body, and viton insides.
He is about as "chemical proof" as you can get, and cheap too.
Go to Home Depot, and there one will find a screw on garden hose adaptor to screw on either 1/2 inch or 5/8 hose.
You will also NEED a gasket to prevent leaks inside the garden hose adaptor!
The reason being that the adaptor will not fit flush up to the end of the guns body, and so a gasket is required to seal it.

Enjoy!
Chris
