How accurate do chemical injectors need to be?

I've seen adjustable chemical injectors rated at 3-5 GPM and 5-8 GPM. How do you determine (with some accuracy) how much flow you're getting to accurately control your mixture?

I've thought about setting up a "dummy" tank of chemical (water) and measuring how long it takes a gallon (or multiple) to pass through.

Are there any easier ways to set your mix without having to do "flow test" over and over (by trial and error)?

Or is it one of those things whereby you start off with a weak mixture and slowly increase until to see the intended results (ball park method)?

Another question is, if your pump is rated at 4 GPM, what is the maximum an injector can pull into the stream?

I avoid adjustable injectors and only use the fixed kind. I make the strength that I want in my container (usually a 5 gallon pail) and drop the chemical filter in. That way I always know what I am spraying. Besides the adjustment part is just something else that can break.

You can put 1 gal through your down streamer and see how many gal you put out before that gal is gone. Then you have down streamed exactly one gal. The ratio will be 1:(your total output-1gal). Hope this helps.

I only use fixed D's' ERS. I do the same as David but in my 50 gal tank. Make a good strong mix, drop her in the tank and spray away. Been doing it this way for years. Trying to figure out exact measurements will cost you time and drive you nuts.

I tried the adjustable injector and they never pulled as strong of ratio as the similar fixed version.

I don't try to worry about the ratio, like the guys above mentioned, I make up the mix and go to work. If I need to apply a second or third coat, I just do it as sometimes the mold and algae has been growing for years and is thick.

I have spent a lot of time in the past years over-thinking things, way, way too much time over-thinking things and now I just keep to what works.
