So I have my roof chemical mixed and ready to go to a job. Got a deposit yesterday when I get a call today saying that they are not going through with it as this time. I was advised to rip the check up. I explained about my material purchases etc...and they indicated that surely I can use it for another job. I do not have another scheduled roof job. Needless say I was was not a happy camper. What should I have done?...cashed the check immediately yesterday? Any advice?

He may have already put a stop payment on the check.

I don't think anyone can really tell you what you should do about it.
That's really up to you.

Sucks bad I agree.

Some might just move on to the next.....

Some might seek legal aid......

Some might hold his hamster hostage......

Probably better to just call previous customers a few years old and offer them a roof wash right now if your mix won't hold any shelf life.

Some banks nowadays offer online deposits via scanner eliminating a trip to the bank thus allowing for a quicker same day deposit. I have been doing it that way for a couple of years now. IMO it's great and faster.

It just sucks as I shifted a bunch of things around including securing help (i.e a ground person to help keep the vegetation alive...:>))

Learn from it. Have a non-refundable deposit on your proposal. I say this but I don't have one myself. Had the same thing happen last week. Literally had it mixed and on the road. We had others to divert to but still makes you mad.

No proposal with a no refund clause, tear up the check.

It is ripped to shreds and already disposed in the trash

Don't mix b4. Like fireman said. Put 35 gals in 100 gal tank, put a gal of sodium hydroxide in it.
Fill with wit water at job. I am sorry that happened to you.did you get a signature on your proposal?
Tell em too freakin late.

what did the contract agreement between you and them say?

How much was your early cancelation fee?

Oh and I NEVER EVER charge anything in advance
******

Sadly enough, I did not have a cancellation fee...my quote was fairly simple and outlined the agreed upon fee. Both of their signatures were on there to acknowledge our terms. I think I will re-write my contract and have legal verbiage to Cover my butt.

Yes I did get both of their signature. I spent almost 45 minutes to an hour discussing the process and what they can expect.

Run to their bank and cash the check.......then they never call you again.... Tear up the check, pour the mix over cornflakes for breakfast and hope he calls you next time cause you were nice to him and UNDERSTOOD (although we all think he is a smuck )..........or
when all else fails and you want to feel better,,,,,,SHOOT HIS DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't do contracts on residential and don't collect til we get the job done. I get 6 or 7 reschedules or cancellations a week. Don't take it personal.

All that fickleness is why I don't mess with that residential stuff anymore unless we can do it when the homeowner isn't there.

One day elapsed. The FTC has laws about the 3 day right to cancellation. Those not aware of it, need to be. Those not following it, should be. The owner had every right to cancel the next day and to get a refund. Thank them for the opportunity, tell them you hope to serve them in the future, and move on professionally.

Great info Beth, I know about it in an MHIC contract, but did not know it was federal law.

Just to clarify, we do not usually do a homeowner contract, I stated that because I felt that there must be some sort of agreement in place due to the fact that he had a deposit. I personally never ask for a deposit from anyone (maybe I should) I just dont do it, never have going on 15 years. I think it looks like I cant afford to be in business if I cant get the materials needed for the job. Thats just one of my quirks I guess.

Now on the other hand if it were a wood restoration on a huge log home or something that would be different I guess, seeing as the initial cost may be much greater than that of a standard residential job.

But then this situation is the reason I am reminded why we dont target residential stuff, they have way to many situations to work around at times, lawn guy is coming, kids birthday party ect......

Commercial work is a pain too but 99 out of 100 when they say that they want it, they want it and as long as you do what you are supposed too when you are supposed to you are good.
