It was a filter that caught on fire, fire system put the fire out, manual pull was not used.
Two portable extinguishers were taken to the roof and discharged down the duct by kitchen staff to make sure there was no extension of fire.
We had the fire system recharged and re-certified within 2 hours of being notified. Zero damage to the restaurant (including the filter). Fire and Health department signed them off that night. Open for business the next morning.

Well the obvious problem is the cop giving the info... can't shoot the fire out...haha Just kidding. I have to get my shots in when I can since I'm on the red team. Sound's like the system did its job. Good deal. I really do not like the employees involved in the extinguishment... leave that crap to the professionals. You know that $1,000,000 worth of equipment and trained personnel your taxes pay for. That's not directed at you Grant by any means. Just hate it when we respond to the DIY's with burns all over them cause they tried to be a hero.

Well maintained ducts, properly serviced fire system it is still possible to have a fire. But the end result is where the difference lies.

Hermosa Beach is a 1 square mile city, any fire is an automatic mutual aid situation, and Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach are included as first response units. The article was very much sensationalized.
