What can you put in the center of the 'pancake' to deflect the flame after whatever was there disintegrates?

More Ceramic Fiber.
There are two types
1) Ceramic Fiber Board which is hard like cardboard
2) Ceramic Fiber Blanket which is soft like Fiberglass.
If you need it right now go to a place that sells Fire place inserts or a heating and Air conditioning Installer.

***DO NOT USE FIBERGLASS***
It will catch your machine on fire.

Oh. If you mean the small round one then it has to be welded in. I replace it with a 1/4 inch thick peice of steel.

Yeah, the one in the hole through the coil. I dont't weld so I replaced it with a metal outlet cover box on each side of the coil with bolts through the middle pulling them tight. Much less than 1/4" steel and didn't last too long. I was wondering if there was a fire brick or something made to go in there. I/4" steel sounds like the best bet.

Take a look at what MiTM does. They have a heavy peice of round stock with a 1/4 steel peice on top. They don't weld it to the coils. Maybe you can order just that part.
Target Assembly 5 inch Part #20-0226
