The drive way was 1500 square feat with mild rust stains. He also wanted two houses washed as well. The house was 2400 square feet. I quoted him 500 and he said that was way to high. I stuck to my guns and I had already given him a 10% discount. What do you guys think? Should I have gone lower?

I'm to the point now where I don't even bid residential anymore. If someone calls for residential work I just tell them that the first available date is 8 weeks from now. Too many headaches with residential customers I have found.

You should have started explaining the additional surcharges for chemicals, insurance, usage tax, fuel surcharge and on and on. Sometimes that makes them stop and think.

That price is spot on!(Maybe even little low) That customer is probably used to getting quotes from the neighbor kids or guys who use lowes pressure washers and do houses for beer money. Probably saved yourself a headache not getting that one. But you know that he would have been speechless when you cleaned the 2 houses and driveway in half a days work! Hes probably used to whoever washed his house before blasting his house all day with high pressure and using all his water.

Did you ask the customer to explain the assumption on his price? Did you explain to him the merits and reasons your price may be a bit higher?
Huh, never thought of that. Asking the customer why they think it's only worth so much. How would you ask? Say something like," where did you come up with that price ? "

I have replied... "Compared to what...?"

I always try to establish a very high value for the service I offer. Sometimes a client who thinks the price is too high, did not understand the scope of work 100%. So by asking his reasoning, if gives you a great opportunity to reestablish value in his eyes for your service.

Whenever i get someone who says my price is too high i usually ask him what he's basing his belief on

Most dont have a belief but just "feel" its more than they thought

Thats when the breakdown and difference of what you do comes in

Your price is your price- you may have to justify it but be confident and believe in your price

This is EXACTLY what I do.
Read this technique online years ago. It's not a be all end all solution but it works.

The natural reaction, after a customer says "seems kind of high", or "your price is too high" is to start explaining why your price is what it is. Instead of doing that, and maybe never justifying or answering the reason the customer thinks the price is too high...turn it around on them...and ask, in the form of a question, "the price.. is.. too high?"(say it slowly, and with a puzzled look)...now they get to explain why they think the price is too high and you can answer to their objection and only their objection. Keep them talking...you listen.

I gave a price of 550 to a guy in a shore town by me for a house wash fence cleaning ( both sides) and a deck wash.
I was already going to be in the town so I figured no real windshield time and I cut the guy a break to do it the same day. Original price was 700.00. When I told the guy 550 you would have thought I just shot his 1st born. He immediately got upset with me and said thanks for the estimate and that my price was out of this world high. I went on to ask him what price he had in mind ( just to see where he was at mentally) his reply was I don't know but I do know that your crazy high priced.

I kindly thanked him and told him good luck finding someone that is licensed and insured for less.

Prior to me giving him his quote he had explained to me that it would take him all weekend to complete this work. I guess his time is not as valuable as 550.00.

Now I would not have gone down any less than my number even if said can you do 450 I would have said no. Some people just don't realize the cost of doing business nor do they care. To me those are not the customers I want anyway. I want the ones who see the real value in hiring a professional that is dedicated to his trade and able to provide high quality results.
