Fire Fighters Fight Fire At Their Own Station

June 10, 2006 05:54 PM

The Livingston Volunteer Fire Department is used to putting out fires, but today, one blaze hit a little too close to home! It happened just before eight Saturday morning in Rockcastle County.

Members of the department were looking forward to Saturday afternoon. Their firehouse had just been cleaned and was ready to host a fish fry as a fundraiser for the department. Assistant Chief, Russell Barron stopped by the firehouse to start pre-heating the fish fryer around seven Saturday morning, but it didn't even take a half hour for the fryer to catch fire.

Fire chief, Sam Stallsworth says he thinks the fire started when the fryer overheated, igniting the grease. Firefighters say the building will have to be completely renovated, but are thankful their equipment-- including the three fire trucks which were inside at the time --- could be saved. "The community, their fire protection is not jeopardized," Stallsworth. "We have four more departments in this county."

Although Saturday night's fish fry was cancelled, firefighters say they plan to host one soon, because now, they need the community's support more than ever.

Funny thing is that the new firestations being built in our county routinely serve 60 meals a day to their men and use a regular home kitchen set up for the set up but have commercial ovens to handle the volume of cooking.

I see two probable causes for this fire
1. No fire suppression system
2. No one in attendance at the fire scene

Odd how the very people who are to enforce various safety regulations do not follow those same regulations themselves
