Got caught stealing water....supposedly

Last night I was getting ready to start cleaning a shopping center. I see a hood cleaner getting set up to clean 1 restaurant and he was hooked into another restaurant's outdoor water tap. I figured that I would hook into another the same restaurant's other water tap. Considering this is a shopping center and the property managers pay for the water (most of the time).

The restaurants were all closed at the time. The manager comes out to go home and see's that we were both tapped into her water supply and throws a fit. By this time I had only got about 75 gallons filled in my tank. She goes nuts on me even after I offered to pay her $10 cash for the water I have supposedly stolen.

She starts writing down the name and phone number off the side of my truck. Now I'm getting upset because I think this is just totally stupid. Now I'm going to screw with her a bit. I tell her to go ahead and call my boss, I'm sure he would be happy to talk to you. Keep in mind she is about 10 feet away from me. She dials the number and my phone rings. I tell her "excuse but my phone is ringing and I have to answer it" I answer the phone and she realizes it's me, gets more mad and hangs up. Then I tell her "I forgot to tell you ma'am but I am the boss"

About 15 minutes later while she is still sitting in her car in the parking lot 3 cop cars pull up. She rolls down her window and is pointing to me. So the first thing I ask the cops is "Is this some kind of joke or something" I explain to them the property manager pays for the water and all she is a flunky restaurant manager. 1 cop tells me that in almost 20 years on the force he has never been called out to deal with a pressure washer stealing water. I explain everything to them and they are cool with everything, no big deal. They just ask me to find another water tap to plug into which I already had. They made the hood cleaner tap into the water of the restaurant he was cleaning. Why he didn't do this in the 1st place is beyond me.

The next morning I call the property manager and explain to them what happened. Her words were "we pay for the water at that property, don't worry about it I'll get to the bottom of this. You can use any tap at any place that's on the property"

Good thing I don't even like the kind of food the restaurant manager serves lol.

I'll give you credit for telling the whole story. A lot of guys might have left out the part about baiting her into the phone call.
It sounds kinda funny, but it probably made things worse.

About a year and a half ago, I was contracted by a property management company to concrete clean their actual office building (not just a property they manage) which was a three story anchor to a plaza, with 4 retail stores and a Burger King. The PM actually owned the BK franchise.

When I arrived at the scheduled time, the drive thru was still open but the lobby was locked. I thought I'd ask them when they close the drive thru and maybe order a burger and drink and wait for it to close. I walked around and knocked on the drive thru window, the woman wouldn't talk to me or acknowledge me at all. I went back to the lobby door and knocked...they just kept looking at me. Right behind me was my logo'ed truck an trailer. Finally the burger flipper cam out and said the manager was scared (LOL!). I told him why I was there and who hired me.

Anyway, I decided to start on the walkways and move to the drive thru later. About 15 minutes later, two cruisers pulled up. One cop was a dick, the other was pretty cool. After they ran my DL, tags, searched the cab, etc.....they told me that the manager said nobody told her I was cleaning the plaza (as if a multi million dollar company clears all their decisions with a night manager of a BK) and wanted me to leave. Considering how the dick was acting, I decided it was best.

Run off by some freakin night manager.

I eventually went back and cleaned the property.....after I made the PM send me a letter authorizing me to be on the property anytime day or night, as well as fax it to their village police dept.

That was great about the phone call, that was funny! hahahahaha I bet she really got upset when she realized it was your phone and could not complain to anyone.

That sucks that she called the police, I hope she realizes what she did and does not continue to be like that in the future.

I don't think the manager will be like that in the future Chris. It was just a 1 time cleaning on the center. The property manager paid the 1 time initial cleaning and that's all they wanted done. Nothing wrong with my work, they just don't want to spend the $$$.

I do have to say though the look on the ladies face was classic when she called me. My helper did everything he could to control himself from laughing, which he didn't. This is the 3rd time in 2 weeks cops have shown up at my jobs.
This instance.
A noise violation from a boom lift I was using.
And I set off a burglar alarm (not my fault).

3 times in 2 weeks. I've been in business for 7 years and have had the cops come out a total of 5 times. 1 fire department call also.

This is why I always carry a copy of the agreements with me in my truck and have a cell phone number that I can call.

Times are tough Vince. I'm thinking she doesn't know what water costs. She was doing her job as best as she knew how. Who knows. Glad it worked out for ya. Would hate to be cuffed and stuffed for a few gallons of water lol.

Have you been watch The Dukes of Hazzard reruns again Gerald lol? The last time I heard the term cuffed and stuffed by was Roscoe P Coltrain lol.
