Their stuff is HIGH priced!
The funny thing is that pawn shop was known as a crap hole before the show came out.
Most of the stuff there was old stuff, just like it is now and WAY over priced.
Back when the economy turned here and the bank cut off all signature loans for over two years, Shelly and I were trying to migrate to a cash only operation. We had a bunch of watches, some Movados, a Porsche Heritage, Chase Durer Aviation watches, (still have one of them) some Omegas and three Rolexes. (BTW, just in case you want to use watches as an investment, the Rolexes and Omegas are the only ones that sell easily and keep their value, you will get raped on the rest if you ever want to liquidate)
So I took a 1985 Rolex two-toned Datejust in mint condition to the old man. It had just been serviced and I had all the service history on it. At that time the shop was just an old beat up downtown pawn shop. I thought I'd get more money there because they had quite a few rolexes that they apparently had taken in during the night from their "walk up" window.
It's been a few years but if I remember correctly he offered me $600-700 for it.
Prior to asking how much he would buy it for I had come in earlier and looked at the exact same watch, but three years older, on sale there for $4200! The cheapest one they had on sale was $3500 and it was all stretched out!
So I asked him how he could offer me $600 for a watch he was going to put right in the display for $4200 and he told me I had a choice, I could either take what he was offering, or "take my a$$ out the door". (I think he eventually offered me $1100 before I left though)
So I took my a$$ and left.
I sold it on Craigslist in less than an hour for just under $3k. To be honest, for convenience sake I would have sold it to the old man for $1500-1800 if he had just offered a fair price.
But now they are booming! They still have a bunch of old junk in there, they still charge too much and now it's become just a big merchandise outlet for t-shirts, mugs and other stuff from the show. And you will NEVER see any of the guys from the show there unless you are there during taping. Then you have to wait in a long line that stretches way down the street.
As far as local celebrities from reality shows go I really like the Count's Customs guy. Their shop is open to the public most of the time and Danny is just as nice in person as he is on the show.
Anybody remember this scene from Leaving Las Vegas? Nicolas Cage pawns a 1993 Daytona (worth at least $7k at that time) and they give him $500 for it. I'm sure it happens every day here.
