General Pump YU2140 Unloader

I've had to replace the titled unloader too many times, has anyone else been having issues with this unloader.
If so has anyone discovered a replacement?

Do you have a 2140 or the new smaller 21405? I've seen several problems with the new smaller bodied ones.

AR has an unloader that is built on the larger body, the VB80/280, rated for 21 gpm and 4350 psi. They're a little pricier than the 21405, but well worth the difference IMO.
 
Under what conditions are you operating, why pump, are you splitting the pump, and what is your source water like. I have seen these unloaders last a few hours and wash out and I have seen them last for years. Usually their lifespan is a direct reflection of how they are used.

I'm using it off the following: Weg Electric motor 10(7.5)HP RPM 1745
Interpump T2040
The line is over 200' long. It sevices one hall in the building. We can run 2 guns off it at good pressure, but are having issues once the third gun joins(not enough pressure).
It is the new smaller body type.
We run off a well and the water source is know to be hard.

Just glancing at this I see several interesting things about the setup, lets start with the unloader however, what about the unloader is going bad. Is it washing out, excessive corrosion, just not working, and are you having any other issues, packing, valves, etc. In my neck of the woods any pressure washer pulling off a well usually sees some sand, and finally do you have any filtering in place?
 
The ones I've taken apart have the cylinder scored. I have a filter before the float tank, but there is no filtration between the tank and the pump.
I have been looking at getting a screen on that line.
 
If the plunger is scored, one of two things is happening, first of course is if you are detecting any sand in the float tank, them you need to filter it better before that tank. The other would have to do with operation, are you changing the tip size when you operate one gun as opposed to two gun and then again at a three gun?
 
There is always a way to get trash in the tank, most of us have the filter before the pump to protect the pump.

I have always heard that the 2140 unloader is the best there is, almost indestructible but I have also heard a lot of problems with them lately.

I wonder if they outsourced them to china or something?
 
You usually don't see a filter on a float tank, electric setup, except for a little screen in the float tank. I am assuming this is a stationary setup. I have seen these Unloaders for years, both the new and old and I haven't seen any different problems between the two styles. Almost every problem I have seen has been a result of the way it's being used. I wouldn't be surprised if they have been outsourced to china, lol, everything else has been.
 
We don't change the tip size. It is a stationary unit. I have 9 rooms in that hall that get washed every day. We normally have 3 attendants working that hall, we just wouldn't be able to switch tips every time that number changes. Could that fact be causing our problems?
 
Tips would be why you are having pressure problems with a third gun. I hate to keep asking questions, so I am going to assume you are most likely running 2 guns, since that is a 10.2 gpm pump @ 3000 psi, however given the motor size you are only going to get 1400 psi max. When you split a pump you are splitting the gallons per minute, and when you have two guys operating a split gun system, one guy stops, sets the gun down, moves something, takes a break or whatever...the GPM from that gun has to go somewhere so it goes into bypass. An unloader is a great thing but they work best either open or shut, not half and half, couple that with water that may not be ideal and your going to blow through unloaders pretty regularly. To fix the issue I would have to say to change your work habit, if one guy stops the other will feel the change and he needs to stop as well, this way the unloader is either open or closed. Or use a dual lance setup with an open gun and eliminate the unloader all together. The addition of a third gun would require everyone to have a smaller tip, because each gun would be getting only 3.3 gpm's instead of 5, so too maintain pressure with that lower flow you would have to switch to a smaller tip size.
 
I've been using this giant unloader and I like it better than the general. Don't know about longevity.

Thanks for all the help guys. Hardwaresteve last suggestion makes a lot of sense to me(as to why we go through the unloader so quickly), we have to other units but this one gets the most people and the most work because it is our longest hall.
Gives me a great explanation that I can explain to the boss.
