Fire destroys Gainesville restaurant
by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - An overnight fire destroyed a restaurant on Industrial Boulevard in south Gainesville.
Hall County Battalion Chief Chad Black says units from the Hall County and Gainesville fire departments responded and began an "aggressive attack" on the fire which had already engulfed the 2,000-square-foot Sabor Guanaco Restaurant at Industrial Boulevard and Dorsey Street. But, Chief Black says firefighters had to "pull back" when an air conditioning unit came crashing through the collapsing ceiling. He says two firemen - one from the city, the other from the county - were injured by the falling debris.
Chief Black said one was treated at the medical center and released; the other was treated at the scene and returned to duty. The call came in just after midnight; it was several hours before all units left the scene.
Firefighters spent part of their time trying to protect an adjacent 4,000-square-foot building. Heat from the restaurant fire damaged the siding on that structure.
Chief Black says the cause of the fire has not been determined.
