I get mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I want to support local businesses, and on the other, I feel "friendlier" to the guys online.

I think if you can keep spare parts around, and do the work if the machine breaks down, there is no reason to pay the large difference in price.

My local guy is a Hotsy dealer, and a very decent guy even though I don't buy from him. I've tiyed with asking him to get more involved in these fora, but I don't really know him.

It could be like inviting a new girl at school over to your house, if she turns out to be a drag, she'll still know where you live!
