An open invite for a exhaust cleaning school certificate holders.

Earlier today Rusty posted the following:

"Wow, Rusty! Logged in at the PWI message board and found a lot of intersting info, however, some of those people are harsh!! I think they think they are the only ones to ever clean a hood!! I'll keep reading to learn more interesting facts and to get my daily soap opera fix!!! I think I'll stay silent for a little while to avoid some of the sharks in that water!!!"

On behalf of the membership of this BBS, I would like to apologize to anyone that sees this BBS and this forum in particular as a shark tank. We may appear as harsh individuals, but in reality we are not. We are trying to protect an industry that has been riddled with scam artists over the years, and when someone comes aboard claiming to be the ultimate expert that has all the answers that person will be hounded and possibly ridiculed just because he has upset the fine balance of professionalism that normally exists here.

That being said,
If you are a Rusty graduate, or IKECA or PWNA or Phil Ackland or any other kitchen exhaust cleaning school graduate or certificate holder please join in, ask questions (no such thing as a stupid question) make comments or even tell a silly joke (in the appropriate forum) we will try to make you feel at home here. We are not "the only ones to ever clean a hood!!" although you will find more combined experience for hood cleaners on this board (and a few others) than you will ever have a chance to meet in person!

hard headed guys

Rusty, I went and looked at the PWI and read some. Those guys are determined that we cant do 3 jobs a night or make the money you were saying. Let them work 3 or 4 man crews and make less money. We will be there to take there jobs when they get tired of making the little money. I started to reply but gotta go. I have 4 jobs today starting at 2pm and going till .........I finish."

This is an open invitation to any member from the Certified Hood & Duct Cleaners Association to step up to the plate and introduce yourself.

These guys are just as curious as hell to get a chance to chat with you.

Please don't add any more rhetoric to this thread. I am trying to welcome some of your graduates to this board.
 
CHDCA certificate holder here. At the plate, ready to swing. I'm hoping to experience some of that fine balance of professionalism here on this board. But I will be looking out for the sharks. Please post no swimming signs in shark infested areas. Thanks.
 
Welcome to PWI, we all hope that your will share your ideas with ours. Everyone has a story to share or to hide. Take it slow and you will like it here.

I hope your talking about the weather in Arnold and not refering to the BBS!!
So tell us about your experiences, are you running as a one man operation? Are you doing 3-4 jobs a day/night?
What have you found to be the most difficult thing to do?
Is it profitable yet? How long have you been cleaning flues?
 
I operate with a two man crew. I like being bossy sometimes and it helps to have someone to boss around. I am working on adding a crew, 2 man, and prefer to do 2 jobs a night. 3 on Sunday if possible. I have been in operation since Jan. 30, 2003 and the growth of my business has been pretty good. If I don't get that crew assembled before next month then I will be doing the 3 to 4 jobs a day thing.

Probably the most difficult thing to do is bid a Chinese restaurant, they never want to pay what its worth. So I try to stay away from them now, I don't even go there any more.

Profitable? I am paying my bills and aquiring lots of new ones :). I'm putting most of everything I earn back into the business, advertising, memberships, etc.. The first couple of months were tight, but after the repeat work started it got a lot more comfortable.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Chinese restaurants are the most difficult to clean and if you are at the point where you realize that you cant make money servicing them for the price they want, you have crossed a major hurdle.

I just graduated from Phil Ackland school. I bidded 4 jobs.
I need a suggestion or help to get a good insurance for hood cleaning. I lived in Sacramento
Also, if someone in Sacramento area selling their equipment, I will be interessed
 
We've used two man crews for 20 plus years and we generally have a third person that floats or we used them at hopitals, hotels or those jobs where logistics are impossible.
 
OK, I will talk to you now. I got certified and have been in business since 4-02. I started as a partnership, but am now owner/operater. If it is a more difficult or bigger job I have some friends that could use the extra money. I have done 4 cleanings in a 13 hour period before. That includes travle time . On average I do 8-10 cleanings a week. Since I have now cleaned the same restaurants with a helper and without. The cleaning time doesnt change more than 15- 30 minutes, depending on the size of job.
As far as Chinese, I quit giving my information to them a while back. Every once in a while one will call and want me to give them a bid. I bid it for what I want from it and they always say " TO HIGH TO HIGH" I say thats my price if you need me call me.

As far as profitable? Since the first of the year when the partnership desolved. The profits have steadily increased. I enjoy working for myself.
 
Thanks a lot for your inputs in my young career of Hood Cleaning. I am getting a lot of help from DPW in bidding and others. They are awesome and I encourage anyone who seeks a certification to try them out.
What is too much or TO HIGH TO HIGH in Sacramento California?
Any equipment sellers?
