Engine Replacement

I had a 16hp Vanguard give it up last night. Fortunately the job was local and the crew just went back to the shop and picked up the portable backup unit.

This is the second one to go out in 4 months. Same problem , motor siezes up, on the rear crankcase cover it breaks a hole thru the case at the camshaft. Very strange for it to happen to two engines. Both units had over 1500 hrs. Changed oil regular and regular service. No sign at all something was about to happen. I tend to keep equipment until it is used up. When Im done it is done, wore out, ka put, 86ed. Anyone else ever wear out a vanguard?

Anyway Im upgrading to a 18hp. Reason is, Its available sooner, fits my application, and is 250.00 less than a 16hp.

Call Jacks Small Engines as per JohnB suggestion a while back. Thanks John ;) .

I tried to get one local first but no one had one available and would take 10 - 14 days , bummer.

Vanguard seem to be reliable and hard working, no complaints.
2000 hr = 120000 miles ( 2000 hrs @ 60mph = 120000 mi ) If you look at it that way thats a lot of miles.

We have always used electric motors.
I was looking into gas but thought the maintinance factor was to high.

Wonder if the Hondas are any better?
Like ya said, Its alot of wear and tear.

13 HP Honda running a 3500 psi 4/gpm pump + a 2000 watt generaTor for the burner on the whitco.. so far I have 700 hours on the machine and its still jammin... I go to go find some wood to knock on...

Vanguard is good I have one on my riding lawnmower I think its pretty old but it styill runs fine after all of those days in the rain///

I have had that happen wiht a vanguard three times. What happens, is that apparently the camshaft breaks and wears a hole into the rear cover. I had one that appeared to be running fine, but when we took it apart, it had a broken Rod, and cracked crack, and a broken camshaft. I have since switched to HOndas. I can get a 20 hp honda cheaper that I can get a 16 hp Vanguard, and usually have it the next day, and it is all local.
