Does anyone use roller pumps to spray roofs?

I read on another forum about the use of roller pumps for roof spraying. Does anyone have any experience using these? Hypro is one particular company that makes them.

The chemical bandit uses delevan roller pumps.I had terrible luck with them. When you first start using it they spray really well, but after a few weeks, mine would start to weaken on me. Then they would break altogether and I'd have to order a new one. However, Chris from Corpus has been using his for 2years and never had a pump go down, and he does alot more roofs than i do I think.

I think Chris from Apple will chome in here soon, and he's got loads of info.

I just added a comet pump to a 5.5 Honda engine today that I've had sitting in my shop for the past year. This is not the same Comet pump that is advertised on northen tool. This one is made for Chlorine. Set it all up today. Plumbed it to a ball valve at my chem reel so that I can still use my surflow when i want to. The comet that I got puts out 4gpm @ 220psi. I"m gonna wind it down between 70-80psi. when doing Roofs. I cranked it all the way up and put a 0030 tip on it and it shot out an easy 45ft. I'm hoping this is the ticket I've been waiting for. I'm over the 12 volts. I'm always repairing them and or replacing them. I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them.

I am about to purchase the udor zeta 40P pump. I bought a Honda 4 HP engine off ebay today to power the pump. Got the Honda pretty cheap. However, today I read the post about roller pumps from Chris at Apple. I want to be fully informed of all my options before I purchase the Udor pump.

Basically, I need a pump I can spray unwalkablke places from the gorund or a ladder. I don't think the 12 volt pumps will give me that ability, nor will the chemical bobcat from PT.

If anyone has other solutions, not just roller pumps, please let me know.

Hi Larry, I was replying before I saw your post. I am intrigued with the comet. Will it bolt up to a 4 HP Honda? How much does it cost and where do you get one?

Pretty sure it will bolt up but you better check. The one I got lists for $1100.00 He showed me in the book. Thats not what they normally sell for though. I paid $650.00 and $25.00 to have it shipped next day. I'll get the model # for you tomorrow. The book on it is in my truck. Ask Chris Tucker about the Zeta. He should be able to help you with that one as far as information. I know he wasn't to keen about the Comet but I think he was talking about another model. Different than the one I got.

I HAVE used Roller Pumps.
I liked the CHEAP Cast Iron 4 roller Hypro's with Buna Rollers.
Buna is a soft rubber like compound that does not CRACK like Poly or Nylon does when the pump freezes up.
They lasted about a month of cleaning 3 to 5 roofs a day, 6 days a week, like I did for YEARS.
I considered them "the cost of doing business", and chit canned them when they failed.

I have the Bandit with the roller pump but I guess Bob at PressureTek is not selling them anymore because some would not hold up from what I hear. If you are not making a lot of profit selling them and then some come back and you lose the profit, time to look at another pump.

My Bandit is still running strong and I have a spare pump but when they do give out, I am looking at the pump Larry just got (depending on how it holds up), the Udor Zeta 40, the rig like Chris Tucker has or maybe the John Blue pump that some other guys have.

There are a lot of options out there, you have to decide what is best for you and what your budget is and see if there is a market for roof cleaning in your area, a lot of places and people do not know that you can clean roofs.

I used roller pumps for a little while for spraying roofs,. they do spray really well, but they don't spay with the same oomph after a few weeks of work. And that was with rinsing. To me they have to be rinsed or they will be trash in a very short time. Bottom line is they do work, and I love the way they spray when they're new, but that downfall of the pump is irritating. Just keeps losing velocity and you start having to try and compensate by sneaking the engine RPM's up. Then the pump dies. I now use an air diaphragm pump and used it all last year, and it still works the same. But using a roller pump to start with would be fine, better than messing around with the 12v electric in my opinion.

Have you done any marketing or asked around to see if there is an interest or demand for roof cleaning? Depending on what you find out and how much work you get is what I would use for the basis for selection for the pump.

You might not have that many people interested or you may have a lot.

Areas are slowly learning that you can have your roof cleaned instead of replacing it, but it takes time and a lot of advertising so if it does not take off right away or even in a year or two, it is just how it is.

What's a roller pump, a bandit, a john blue, etc..?..lol...You can tell by his post and recent rig pics that appleman don't use them. Stick a gas powered or house current powered air compressor and an air diaphragm pump on yer rig. Great for many a pumping needs. I have 3 Wilden...Apple uses kyner in his pumps last I heard.
