Dodge vs. Ford, Ford vs. Dodge

In some ways this has been talked about before but just the nuts and bolts here.

If you were to buy a new truck today which would it be, Ford or Dodge diesel? (It will be diesel, there is no doubt about that so not need to mention gas engines)

Why?

3/4 ton vs. 1 ton, only difference I can see is 1 heavy spring.

Single vs. dully rear wheels?

Short bed vs. long bed.

Ford makes a short bed 1 tone, Dodge makes their 1 tons with long bed dullies only.

Now explain why you bought the one you have, in other words did you test drive both, owned the other brand first or a die hard Ford or Dodge owner.

Sorry Chevy owners I am not a GM fan.

Hi Jon,

I bought our two trucks (happen to be GM) without seeing or driving them before the purchase!

I was interested in spec's. Axles, suspension, engine capabilities and GVWR's! We do not put on enough miles to justify a diesel (extra expense) engine. Our primary unit is coming up on 5 years old and has less than 65,000 miles on it!

If I could have found a Ford or Dodge with the spec's that we have on our GMC's and of course at a competitive price I may have bought one!

Sounds like you must be in the market for a new truck Jon! :)

I have a 3/4 ton short bed Dodge diesel, and love it. I don't like the Ford trucks. I went with the 3/4 ton, because it does everything I need it for.

:)

I also have a 3/4 ton Dodge short box Cummins. I ove it woudl never trade it for the world. Why did pick it. Well it is a 5.9 V-6 and still produces the nearly the same power as the powerstroke V-8. With the Dodge you will get better fuel mileage. The looks I love the Dodge style. Ford's are just a bunch of want a be's. Cummins is a brand you can trust. They have stood ther test of time. DODGE RAM ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

well, i have to say ford because i just bought one.

F350 super duty, 4x4, 4 door, dualie, 8ft box, diesel, 11,500 gvwr, lariat. never had anything so big!

will i ever need to use all of that hog???? probably not, but i have it if i need it!

also, at 1800 miles so far, 16-17 mpg mix driving. i'm happy with that.

my lovely wife, which we are soon to be separating, says that i will be living in that thing. she's such a sweet heart! i love you dear!

hummmm.. my nephew had a ford, bought a dodge, 2 months later he wished he had his ford back.

now i'm not one who would complain about anyone of the names, but this did influence my decision. the cummings motor is great one though.

when i was a heavy chevy man, we used to say.

You all know my opinion. However, for the unenlightened among you, I prefer the Ford.
Mine is a short bed crew cab. F-250, I would have preferred the F-350, but I got a lot better deal on the used 250. ($4000 below low book)
I have heard of a lot of people that have had trouble swith the Dodge, and a few that have had problems with the Ford. So far I have 63,000 miles on my two year old truck, (I have had it about 18 months, and bought it with 10,000 miles) So far the repairs have been, new tires,(and wheels:cool: ) and replace the brake pads on the front. Other than that, nothing unusual.

Dominic,
You better keep that 5.9 V6. It is truly a collectors item. Most of them are a straight six:rolleyes: As for the Ford being a bunch of Wannabe's, look at the old ford two tons, and look who is copying who.

By the Way, I am a die hard Ford Fan, and would not even consider a Dodge.

Ford F-250, Short bed for parking reasons, and the awesome V10, as I can't stand the diesel noise.
Never considered a Dodge, and do not know much about them, but am a Ford fan, so it does not really matter.
3/4 ton is fine for me, as it pulls the weight and I do not carry a big payload.

I under stand you are a Fordman through and through . Tha smae as I am a Dodgeman til the end. I have also had my Dodge for two years I bought mine brand nw and I am already pushing 65,000. I pull the trailer and then every chance I get I am in the hills hunting one thing or another. Love the Diesel for the hills. All I have done to mine was new tires and rims. Oh also bought a K&N air filter for it. Never have to buy a new air filter again just clean it from time to time.

I am DODGEMAN :D

Bowies ride or I mean the Ladies love to ride with a Chevyman b/c they know it's a MAN size truck.

Oh heck Gav, when was the last time you really put a TIE on, BOWIE or not?

Now this answer will really show just how much you love bowties:D

Two questions about Ford that have come to my attention.

1: Their old fashioned Twin I beams, if they are the same as they were 30 years ago, 10 and even 5 years ago something is wrong, I recall those twin i beams are bad for the front end.

Yes or no?

2: Rumor needs expanding, their transmission, does it have problems. It was mentioned to me something about burnt transmission fluid, anyone know about this problem?

Oh and the milage, I get 17 mpg with my Dodge not towing and around 15-16 towing.

What do you Ford diesel guys get ?

Jon

JON,

I HAVE 1999 FORD F250 4X4 SUPER DUTY CREW CAB SHORT BED
AUTOMATIC, GOT IT USED WITH 36,000MILES ON IT . AT 60,000 REBUILT TRANSMISSION $1,850 . HAS 80,000 ON IT NOW .THE REAR END IS A 410 , I ALSO HAVE 50 HP CHIP IN IT . THE TRAILER I PULL IS VERY HEAVY 12,000# WITH ALL THE EQUIPMENT AND 525 OF WATER 9 TO 11 MILES PER GALLON OF FUEL, DEPENDS ON IF YOUR GOING WITH WIND OR AGENTS, IT GETS AROUND 16 WITHOUT TRAILER.

THE NEWER FORDS HAVE MORE H/P FROM THE FACTORY.

AS FOR AS DULLEYS IT JUST 2 MORE TIRES TO BUY!

Mellow why did the tranny go out so soon ?

Now your information is some of what I wanted to hear, milage and such.

My trailer is rated 12,000 GVW and I am still finishing it up but guess it will weigh around 9,000 to 10,000 fully loaded.

The rear end I want is 3.73 with limited slip. Not going with the dully but might change from extended cab to crew cab. Placed order yesterday and can make changes for one week on it then goes to production.

Also not getting 4 wheel drive, have no need for it, why pay more for insurance and upkeep is how I see it.

Jon

JON,

A CLIP/ KEEPER CAME OFF, HE SAID IT WAS NOT THE FIRST ONE HE HAD SEEN.

I CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION OIL AT 50,000 MILES OR SO THERE WERE A LOT OF METAL DUST IN THE OIL, DIDNT LOOK GOOD THEN! I KNOW THEY HAVE INPROVED THE 2002 SOME BY NOW . THE MOTOR 100,000 BUT THE TRANSMISSION ONLY COVERED TO 36,000 MILES,

DROVE ACROSS SOME SCALES TRUCK & TRAILER WAS 16,500#
HAD ABOUT 375 IN THE WATER TANK.

I THANK YOU'LL BE HAPPY WITH THE 373 REAR END THAT WILL GIVE YOU 13 TO 14 MPG MAYBE ! I HAD A CHEVY 3/4 TON WITH A 373 "1990" BEST TRUCK I EVERY HAD , HAD 215,000 MILES ON HER, CHANGED OIL EVERY 3,000 , HAD TO GET REED OF HER THE RADIO QUIT WORKING.

I DO USE MY 4 WHEEL DRIVE I WASH HEAVY EQUIPMENT, JUST A LITTLE BIT OF MUD WITH THAT HEAVY TRAILER , I WOULD BE THROUGHING MUD ALL OVER THE TRAILER. 90% OF THE TIME I DONT NEED IT.

SHORT BED , CREW CAB ALL THE WAY ! HOW MUCH MORE WOULD THAT BE ? $4,OOO

YOU'LL LIKE IT , I LIKE MINE , YOU WOULD LIKE THE DODGE ALSO
BUT THEY ALL HAVE THERE UPS AND DOWNS! EVEN THE CHEVY DURAMAX, IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION.

ENJOY IT !

Well I test drove the Ford, hate to say but the seat is uncomfortable, like it is narrower then Dodge by 3 inches.

It felt like my butt was hanging off the edge of it so went and tested a new Dodge, same as the one I have seat wise but more powerful and has a few more goodies.

Darn I hate these kind of decissions:confused:

Yeah I know there is always that other brand out there for those that love em.

Guess I need to test drive it again.

I hear what your saying about having your big butt hanging off the seat. Are they captain chairs?? I have a 98' F-150, and i found the 60/40 split to be MUCH more comfortable to sit in as opposed to the captain's chairs. That being said, my Ford is the most comfortable vehicle i've ever rode in. For me, all the armrests are in the right spot, etc.

This would be my advice to anyone buying a new vehicle: buy the one that has been out the longest. From the patterns that i see, anytime one of the Big 3 comes out with a new body style, it takes a couple years to get all of the kinks worked out of it. I bought my F-150 new in 98', and put in a new tranny under warranty. Since, i've talked to others that had the same problem. I've seen that the new Chevy's have received very poor ratings, seems they are having a lot of problems with those trucks.

Anyways, my advice would be to go with a Ford or a used Dodge, the older style.

jon

The Dodge has instructions on the back, that should be enough information. DODGE means STAY AWAY, need I say more. It might be the best you have ever had but you have to be just a little ashamed of it. Some of the olders ones even tell you to RAM it.
