Distance to Combustibles

I was inspecting an exhaust system the other day. The wall directly behind the cooking equipment (char broiler, grill, etc) is masonite over drywall and wood studs in the wall.

I though I would be able to find codes in my NFPA 96 that I could give to their maintenance guy. 96 doesn't cover the cooking equipment in a kitchen.

Can anyone tell me where I should look to find codes stating what the wall should be covered/constructed with? Usually find concrete or stainless steel in these areas!

Thanks for your time and interest.

Contact your local building department. They can tell you what code they used when the kitchen was built. The masonite burns, therefore it is not to be used behind the stove w/o 18 inches ? of clerance. The building department may let you copy teh relevant parts of the code. I would look in my copy of IBC, except it is in the van and too cold outside to leave my warm dry office.

Local inspector, take pictures and go meet him. The personal relationship you develop with local inspectors can be priceless. They can recommend you when a problem arises, when other contractors need to be cleaned up after their screw up, to business owners that don't know who to contact and when if the BS EPA regulations come up they may need you to influence them. Try to touch base with them a few times every couple of months, they will remember you and they love to have their expertise asked about before a problem, not afterwards. Too many contractors making mistakes they remember the ones that are proactive and be sure to give them your card and get their number. I have prevented getting fined and solved all types of problems and even thwarted a few threats of lawsuits due to relationships with local building inspectors.
