RESIDENTS were evacuated from Newport in Barnstaple on Saturday night after fire erupted above the Ganges Indian Restaurant.

Six fire crews plus the hydraulic platform, command vehicle and support rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised just before midnight. Diners were still eating in the restaurant downstairs when the alarm was raised and it is thought the fire had been burning slowly for some time before engulfing the roof.

A 200-metre cordon was thrown around the building and people living in adjoining homes were given alternative accommodation for the night.

Divisional Officer Neil Blackburn said the owner had gone upstairs to see what was happening but was beaten back by the flames. He was taken to hospital and kept in for 24-hours. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, although investigation is ongoing.
