Des Moines Deck Cleaning

This is a deck we pressure washed and sealed in Des Moines, Iowa. Cedar decks turn grey because of the sun but as you can see they can be restored to their original appearance and protected against future weathering.

I enjoy cleaning cedar decks but unfortunately I come across many over 15 years old that have never been protected or treated with anything. People often say that they were told by the builder or lumber supplier that cedar never needs to be cleaned or sealed. While we can still salvage the decks, we do see alot of cracking and warping that could have been prevented had they called us earlier.

Doesn't need sealed? That's a myth that needs busted. Cedar decks will turn gray within 30 days without sealer. Today's cedar is not the old heartwood that our parents and grandparents are used to. It's younger cedar that is harvested earlier. It's not as dense and doesn't have as much natural protection as the old stuff, but at any rate, cedar needs sealed or it's going to do just what you said; crack, peel, and check.
