Deck price vs. Fence price

I have done many decks but will be doing my first fence this week. I was just wondering if you price the same for a fence as you would a deck. As in same price per sq. ft.
Also, is there anything I should be aware of on a fence as compared to a deck?
Thanks in advance.

That depends on what style of fence it is..............is there spaces between the boards? Is it shadowbox? etc.....

Probably the worst thing about a fence is having to bring the wand down to the dirt all the time..........can potentially get messy.

I now charge $1/lin ft for one side and $.85/lin ft for the other. I charge the same for 6' as a 4'. (4' require much more bending, which also means getting closer to the spray/mud.) I used to "guestimate" for fences, and always found it took longer/used more chem/was messier than I thought it would be.

Be aware of the neighbors yard. Stuff will be flyin' everywhere. Each board has 4 sides to clean - no matter how far apart the boards are.

I use the same chems (sod hyd to clean/strip and oxalic acid to brighten/neutralize) as I use for decks. Keep your pressure as low as possible. Rinse, rinse, rinse...including the grass around the fence.

Typical fences (privacy, pickett) are easily priced by square foot area. I spoke to several contractors at the Pittsburgh PWNA convention and heard prices ranging from 33 cents to 65 cents per square foot. I heard "by the linear foot" prices that ranged from $1-$3 per foot per side. Pretty wide variance, with more experienced contractors coming in on the higher end of things.

There are spaces between the boards. I am not really sure what a shadow box fence is. Is there anywhere I can see pics of different fences then I can tell you what type it is.

Shadow box is also known as board on board fencing. At an angle you can see between the boards. Stockade is where you can't see between the boards. Both are typically privacy style fences, not short like pickett or split rail. Hope this helps...

Beth, if you mean at an angle you can see through to the other persons yard, that is what it is. I guess it is shadow box. Thanks for the info. I bid it at .55 per sqft. I haven't heard back yet. I will be doing their windows on thurs. so I will get an answer then.

Pete,

I assume you were not trying to insult me by talking about "more experienced contractors" getting more money. I think experience makes a difference, but you must take location into account when estimating prices...unless the prices you quote include sealing.

I think Pete was just trying to point out that of the people he talked to, it seemed like the higher prices came from the guys/gals that have been doing this longer........and maybe know better from first hand experience how to properly price such a job.

I don't see any insults............

As you point out, demographics are going to have a large role in how much money you can charge.

John, the prices I reported included cleaning and sealing (all materials and labor).

By the way, I didn't realize by your post that the price you mentioned was 'wash-only'. I do think we all have to make an effort to be more clear when we try to help out. I'd rather stop posting here than 1) give incomplete or bad information 2) get into personality issues in public with strangers. No insult intended.

Hi Extreme,

We charge $3.00 per linear foot/per side plus the cost for the Menwood finish. Fencing isn't always the easiest to sell but is a bigger pain to clean than you realize. Like Mike stated it's messy. We rip down a 4 x 8 sheet of luan into 8' x 1' wide strips and lay them adjacent to the fence. This will keep you from "washing the dirt" sort-a-speak. We base our product usage at 100 sq ft per gallon.

Fencing isn't usually as profitable as restoring decking simply for the time involved. For this reason we don't exactly hunt them down :) but if they come our way by all means we'll do them... at a cost.

Take Care,

Greg Rentschler

Gregs reply is right on the money, many years since so prices probably up but we are around $5 per foot per side on a 6 ft stockade fence

Fences blow but are very easy to redo the next time. Just bleach it and reapply stain without a drying oil in it and you'll never have an issue. The darker the stain or a stain with a ton of pigment works best. A very dark stain will lighten up over time . I have two hundred feet of white cedar over ten years old done twice. Fences are one of the few thing I'll clean and sell them the oil to do it themselves . Not to much of a call to do fences in new England . Rot and replace! Or I see the use of "Over lap Stain". I pretty much see it used every where a stain was tried .Over lap stain is garrenteed to lap !

Shane is always on the d-fence. Shane that would be a great logo for a fence oil. Like you see at the football games?

Good stuff Jim and entertaining all in the same sweep of the key board.

Fences can be a PITA for the most part but I've gotten used to it by now. So pricing them has everything to do on the particular project itself.

You always have so much stuff to protect in the yard and surrounding yards plants, pools concrete etc. and dealing with the wind. So my Lft price varies depending on age of the fence and what all I have to protect. My cleaning cost varies from my minimum $ all depending on what needs to be done?

I would say fences are priced cheaper than decks for the most part but there are always so many factors involved with either a deck or a fence. I've been able to keep good prices on decks and fences with the great price of the Gray Away that gives me a great sqft/gallon of 130-150.
