Customer or competitor

I got a call today and either I pssed off a potential customer or called them on their questions. The guy got our phone number off one of our trucks and called asking if we cleaned houses. He did non kn ow how big the house was, only it was a 2 story house. After I said yes he asked what we used, which was fine. When he started asking how we did it and if we climbed ladders I asked him if he wanted a house wash or was starting a business and wanted to find out how to clean a house he got mad and went off and said if he want us he would call.

It would have been a small job about 25 miles away. I still think he wanted to do it himself for someone else.

I get them especially about roof cleaning.

Caller: How much do you charge for a 30 square 5/12 pitch roof cleaning?

Me: There are some variables. I really need to see the roof and I'd be glad to give you not just an estimate but a firm price. Can I have the address?

Caller: I'd like to ask a few questions first. What chemicals do you use?

Me: We use a roof mixture containing that the roof manufactures association recommends and some additional items suited for our climate. Can I get the address so I can get you a firm price?

Caller: I'll call you back.

How many home owners know what a square of roofing is or what pitch their roof is? I'd rather they just explain they are roofers and want to know how to clean one. The other sign is a blocked number.

I had a guy get out of his white truck that was SPRAYPAINTED with the services he offered, you know tree removal, junk scrap metal, pressure washing, and everything else that shows what a professional he was. He came to me while I was cleaning a gas station and was asking me what I charged them. I very politely responded: Why? and he told me he was just wondering. I , again politely, responded It does not matter what I charge, You are not nearly equipped enough to do a job like this. He turned red, it was really funny. He proceeded to tell me how wrong I was and would not give it a rest. I said: I tell ya what, how much insurance do you have. He shut up and got in his truck and drove off.

Fun stuff. Sometimes people are fun to piss off. I have no problem helping people out, but when I am approached the way this guy came off, I am not so willing to help.

Had calls like that every week for about the last 6. Other day I asked for the address, he said he didn't know lol
