Guests, staff evacuate hotel
A grease fire in the kitchen of the Millennium Hotel in downtown caused more than 400 guests and staff to evacuate the building shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday.
The fire started in a cooking appliance in the kitchen and spread to the duct work, District Fire Chief Fred Prather said. Heavy smoke was coming from the first floor when firefighters arrived, he said.
Most of the 408 guests and 60 staff already had left the building when firefighters arrived, Prather said. Firefighters searched the building and had to open the duct work to extinguish the fire. They completed the work in 90 minutes.
