Chemical Tank Filters - Do It Yourself

Make a filter for your top draw chemical tank by using a length of sch 40 slotted pipe used for installing shallow wells.

Need:

1 to 3 feet of 1 1/4", 1'", or 3/4" slotted pipe
1 slip by thread pvc elbow
1 pvc slip cap
1 pvc hose barb by mpt
Length of ag hose (twice the inside diameter of the discharge hose or at least a size larger)
De-Burr Tool
PVC cleaner and Glue
Heat Gun

Take the piece of slotted pipe and de-burr both ends, remove all debris and clean ends with pvc cleaner. Attach the cap and elbow on opposite ends of the pipe with pvc glue.

Use the heat gun to heat one end of the ag hose to soften (not burn) the hose to allow you to slip the hose barb into the hose. Allow the hose to cool. Install the mpt end into the threaded open end of the elbow and drop into the tank. You can insert lead fishing weights into the filter to help it sink and lay flat on the bottom of the tank.

I might be wrong but if you use slotted pipe all the way down then when the chemical level gets lower, air might get sucked in and then you won't be pulling chemicals.

I would think that regular pvc all the way down with the slotted pipe for the last 1 or 2 inches (at the bottom) so you don't lose prime or get air into the system.

I have used pvc pipe to keep the chemical hoses straight in the chemical tanks/buckets and it works good but I cut a notch in the pipe so it will not get stuck sucking on the bottom or the wall.

The idea is a good one and like I said, maybe I am wrong as I have never used slotted pipe.

Ok, thanks.

I thought the slotted pipe was up/down, not laying down on the floor of the tank.

I was thinking that if Rex or Lori designed this then it obviously works great and I must be wrong.

Thanks for pointing that out to me Chris.

The filter lays at the bottom of the tank. Please see the picture below.

Is that ag hose??? That actually looks like something someone could work with. Much better than that yellow monster I bought. I used the items you provided me today. The Ammox-Lo seemed to do a good job. I was pleased. Oh, The yellow monster did not make the trip. It's kinda like a real stiff hose that swallowed a bunch of Viagra. To hard and proud to work with.

Lori, Thank you for sending a new hose. Without even asking. I guess my post must have seemed harsh. I have placed one order with you and you sent me free stuff. And now you are replacing a hose that just would not work for me. I apoligize if the post in any way was a reflection of your business as being anything but Positive,Promp,Honest and Knowledgeable. Thank You! Andy

You can get the slotted hose at a plumbing supply house. However, we find that in areas of the country where the soil is mostly clay, you can't find them. We have some slotted pipe if you need it, Chris! Great Question.

Super Idea, Lori and Rex. :clapping:

Nice job on this filter concept. This is one of those times where I said, "why didn't I think of that?" What a great option to bulb style Stainless Steel filters or the AG style filters from Tractor Supply, etc.
