Chemical Storage bins?

How do you all store dry chemicals such as caustic, SC, citric acid and other granular and powders in your vehicles? Do you just use the bags or? I know about having the MSDS sheets but is there any DOT law about original containers and/or labeling etc? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about laws, but I do know it very important to label chemicals. Having deadly chemicals in un-labeled storage containers is just asking for trouble. If you don't have the original, make up your own.

All chemical containers need to be labeled with the name of the chemical at minimum.

You need to bet a folder or 3-ring binder to put all of the chemical MSDS in there and it needs to be within reach of the driver at all times. In case of an accident, the HAZMAT team will find it and determine how to handle the cleanup if you are unconscious if there is a chemical spill.

I usually use the 5 or 3 gallon buckets with GAMMA SEALS (screw top lids) that adapt to regular buckets. They have a big rubber gasket so they do not let air in.

I would not keep them in the original bags because with one little tear, moisture will get in and the powders start to clump and sometimes get very hard.

You could use regular buckets that have tight fitting lids but usually after you break the tabs to open it, they do not stay on very good.

I know a couple guys that use the large pet food containers for their powder chems and put a label on them.

I looked up the GAMMA lids and they are exactly what I was looking for. I'd been using old 5gal chlorine containers but they have 2" holes and with clumps etc they are a PITA. Thanks for the heads up on the MSDS sheets. I have the binder but I need to update it.

Thanks for the answers.

You are welcome.

I really like the Gamma Seals, they keep the air out and if it starts raining, it will keep the water out also.

I have been using them for a couple years now and they are holding up well.
