So i went and bid a job yesterday. really nasty roof. I told them my price for a house wash, a roof wash and the two together. three different prices. they told me they are getting another quote. thats fine. but now that i have had a second to think about it i really do not want to do the roof. It isn't the money end I told them what i want and its right next door from my shop ( 1.5 mile ) its the PITA fact.
Has anyone ever given a price and then when the customer calls a week later, after getting another quote, told the customer that they have decided they do not want to do the job?

Gotta take the good with the bad. When I come across a job that's going to be a real PITA I simply price it to be well worth the trouble.

definitely agree

I have told customers who i've called back that i've just booked a few large jobs since we last spoke and probably wont be able to get to you for several weeks

Always go with your gut- If they are a PITA initially thats a sign of things to come in my book

I have had some where they change the rules or try to make up things as we go before the job even starts and then you get that bad gut feeling.....I tell them that the way I bid the job was for this or that, doing this this way and if they had any issues they should have told me before we won the contract and that they cannot make up things as we go.

I have had some good projects where the owners dramatically change the scope after we were awarded the job and now it is going to take 2 to 3 times as long and be a major pita so I tell them that we are not changing anything because this is how I bid it but they can put it out for re-bid and I tell the department that pays why I will not be doing it so they understand and the other guys don't try to bad talk me and they understand.

If you have one of those bad gut feelings, listen to it as it might save you some money, a lot of time and aggravation and possibly your sanity.
