Cabot Sealer?

Have a customer requesting Cabot Sealer.
Have heard of it but have never used it.
Any tricks or suggestions for using it?
Or does it behave about the same as anything else out there when applying it?

I use Cabots and Benjamin Moore stains and I never had a problem with them except that Cabots is a little pricey.
Both of these stains/sealers have great reputations around here.

I know other guys on these bb's have said otherwise but I guess you have to figure out what works best for you. When I do work for other contractors aroud here they will usually request Cabots because of its reputation. If I told them I would use Ready Seal for example they would not go for it because they never heard of it. Not to say that Ready Seal isn't any good. Never tried it.

Also customers know of Cabot stains because of the excellent consumer reports that they recieve and alot of home owners like that. Either way good luck.

We at Sun Brite in Georgia use only two sealers Ready Seal and Cabot . The only Cabot we use is there Solid color stain, comes in many colors, looks like paint ,looks great, little pricey, Our real rich subdivisions around Atlanta are into this two tone deck thing. Where the floor is natural and the handrails and spidles are painted (we match the color to the trim on the house) charge a premium for this service. They look great but are very labor intensive, We call them combo decks. great way to make money.

We also use Cabots.. mainly their decking stains product. Its a totally different look than the traditional. The tend to provide alot more pigment to the surface than other product in the same semi-transparent catagory. Good product though!

Contact Cabot at 1-800 US STAIN. Ask for thier Professional specifications guide. It use to be free not sure now. It covers all of Cabot's products and usage. You can also access their website at www.cabotstain.com

How do you charge for those combo decks? I have been considering re-figuring out how to price all my decks by charging by sq ft of floor space, linear ft of railing, per step, and per piece of lattice, because of this very thing. It sure would simplify the pricing of any deck.

I once had a customer with a deck with alternating diagonal spindles in each span so it had lots of angles to cut in. Of course he asked if I would paint them. I told him I didn't paint. This was strickly because I didn't know how to price the job. It was to big and would have been to time consuming to take a hit on bad pricing.

Would you spray the spindles?

Hey Roy, Thanks for asking, Our combo decks are sealed with Ready Seal on the floor and tops of steps, and Cabot solid color stain on the entire spindles and handrails. We have learned the hard way to seal the floor first. Yes we spray the cabot (airless).

we charge : floors .............$ 1.15 sq.ft. clean & seal
spindle/rails....$ 15.00 Linear foot, clean & seal
Steps,rails.......$ 20.00 per step clean & seal

They are a Pain In the ___ to do , but very lucrative,

thanks for your reply. still a couple of questions.

i have never used solids as i have been doing this for one year, and have only used ready seal.

what are the benefits in using cabot solids over paint?

also, i've never even seen an airless work. heard great things about them but afraid of making that purchase not knowing anything. i spray with a sureflo and use canvess as a tent, then go under with a respirator on the railings. would the same or similar precautions need to be taken with an airless?

what kind of airless would you or anybody recommend and what price range would be?

wish i knew how to post a picture or two. i have been very fortunate to have done some beautiful decks.

Roy if you have your pictures on your pc,,,after you post your reply go down to the browse window,click on it,it will open another window of your pc,look for your pictures,after you find your picture click on it,there be a open button in that window,click it,it should be now in the browse window,if it is click post reply...

hey Roy,

an airless will spray much less material than a shurflo, and it comes out higher pressure in an atomized mist. You could probably buy what you need at HD for about 300 dollars, but i opted for a Spraytech 2105 for about 700 dollars. All you need is something that sprays about .40 gpm. another is Titan 440, and i Graco has a comparable machine. I love the spraytech, get two years of warranty and tune-ups. You dont need an airless for readyseal, but if you ever use anything thicker you'll need an airless (or brush)

personally, i brush the rails on the decks like Chris is talking about.
 
Go to your local paint supply and try their rental models. We have two wagner pro golds and are pretty happy with them but after trying a Spraytech (cant remember the model) model I was dissapointed in ours. The Spraytech ran $2600.00 though compared to $700 each for the wagners. Figure out what areas of the market you want to tackle and decide on the sprayer investment from there. If your looking to do only decks a smaller unit would do fine. If your looking to get into Log and cedar homes I would get a larger unit like a 1+ gpm. The benefit to this is you can spray some of the heavier bodied products and strippers like Back to Nature Products. Plus the $2600 unit could run 2 guns and was hydraulic.

When you do a solid on the rails and spindles,do you do the rim joist in solid when you get the spindles nailed to the rim joist?
