Cable modem,,

Don't get Adelphia if they are in your area, My cable modem sometimes is slower than the 56k I was using before. When it works it is great, but when you get use to it being fast and suddenly it is painfully slow, it makes you want to throw the computer through the window.
I have been told that it is slow sometimes because they over sold it initially and needed to upgrade their servers to keep up. Then I heard yesterday that they are selling off some assets to avoid bankruptcy. I guess my cable modem will never work.

In our area Cable is better than DSL. the phone company here runs it, and they seem to run everything into the ground:rolleyes:

Cable is usually sigbificantly faster than DSL, however it can be terribly slow also, it depends on how many other users are online in your area.

This morning my connection with AT&T Broadband is EXTREMELY FAST!

Just ran a speed test at: www.bandwidthplace.com

Results
Your raw speed was 1560503.78 bits per second.
There are 3 meaningful ways we can interpret this number:
Communications 1.6 megabits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet
Storage 190.5 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.
1MB file download 5.4 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Compared to all connection types worldwide yours is fantastic.

Yesterday around 4-7 pm it was really slow.

Adelphia

Bryan You're right about Adelphia. I was on their cable modem and it was real inconsistant, mostly on the slow side. When I switched to PacBell DSL it ran at 1300K download and 120K up almost all the time. That's plenty fast enough for me.

I had a problem with our local cable people (Insight). The modem and card could not communicate effectively. They burnt my card, and ended up using a peracom/USB system. I spent more time reconfiguring (usually on the phone with their hotline) than I did using the system. All this affected my W98, which is not so stable to start with.

My recommendation is to (1) make the cable election only after they have been in your area for a year or more to work out the bugs, and (2) if they have ANY install problems AT ALL, stop the install and have them put you back on your phone modem.

Good luck.

Cable internet

Broadband is the only way to go..Sub-contracted for years thru various cable providers. Lack of training and fiber is the cause of any system to fail. But if you play the game you'll get 1/2 the year free.. have had cable internet for two years only paid for about one year.
